This is the birthday cake my girlfriend made for me! I think I might've been talking about the tube a bit too much lately.

The little woman, 'er indoors, wifey, or whatever they may be called has been spanner in the works for many Underground shift workers. I've known many a good lineman leave but I've known plenty to get divorced over it too.

The little woman, 'er indoors, wifey, or whatever they may be called has been spanner in the works for many Underground shift workers. I've known many a good lineman leave but I've known plenty to get divorced over it too. I went out with my ex Michelle for around three and a half years. I joined LU after we had split up and I got so much abuse over it - when I lived in Basingstoke, we both lived with our parents (or my mum in my case), despite the fact she was three years older than me. She went on at me for months about moving into our own place, but I wanted to leave things as they were so we could save money for the future and make things better then. Finally we moved into a two bedroom flat and split up about 8 months later, so that tells you what things were like. When I joined LU I moved to London. When the ex found out about it she phoned me and had such a go, saying "You couldn't be bothered to move out for me" and "You'd rather move for the job, trains aren't human are they? You can't hurt their feelings like you've done to me" and stuff like that. She phoned me a while ago to say she went for a day trip to London with her new boyfriend, and he commented on how being a Train Op would be his worst nightmare - she hadn't even mentioned anything about me, just thought it was funny he'd said that. I haven't spoke to her since July, and I'm glad, I'm better off on me own

It was my partner that made me apply for the job - I was still living down in Dorset and he started hassling me to apply for jobs up here.. I'd looked at the Underground several years previous, applied for a form, but never returned it. But being able to apply online made it a lot easier this time round.

Not wishing to detract too much from the last couple of posts, but to bring us back on topic I had this made for me a couple of years ago: Nige is my nickname outside work (cos I drive fast, and at the time I was christened, Nigel Mansell was the F1 world champ)........anyway, I thought it was a fair effort by an amateur cake maker that had never seen an LUL train before; they were made entirely of icing which was a bit much though! ;D ;D ;D

Not to mention the fact that a significant number of Underground shift workers are actually women. (Edited to add - I'm in a bad mood because I'm on nights and tired, I might be a bit more diplomatic if I wasn't, but I do object to the language you used.) Cake looks nice though - did it taste good too?

Both cakes look ace! I think the thing with the shifts is true (although the language and tone of the post wasn't particularly welcome). It is hard to have any kind of normal life what with the shifts. I'm single and I find it hard enough to just see people socially - I can't imagine how hard it must be if you have a partner and kids. I noticed that LUL is quite incestuous with many couples both working for the company - I've always presumed that this is because it's easier to deal with shifts in a partner if you have to do it yourself. And possibly also that some weeks the only people you will be seeing will be colleagues and the taxi driver.

Cake looks nice though - did it taste good too? I can't let that go without a reply! There's nothing sexist or patronising implied or expressed! As far as I'm concerned we are all equal regardless of race, creed, colour or anything else. I don't hold with opinions such as yours which make me out to be of a certain character, which I am not, and I don't believe in PC either. Deliberate misinterpretation is the tool of the PC brigade and it ought to be stamped out in the same way that racism, sexism and harassment should be. Unfortunately we have a government which panders to the PC brigade and which far from harmonising relations between the various factions of society has been driving a wedge between them ever since it came to power. I worked permanent nights for more than half of my 28 years at LT/LU so I am well aware that women work shifts. I encountered many over the years but those I saw in my early days would probably frighten the life out of you because they all punched above their weight and were quite happy mixing in a male dominated environment and holding their own. They were the fluffers and even though they have long gone I have certainly met plenty of females in key roles across the combine who have the same inherent qualities. I find it offensive that you are grumpy because you're on nights, if a shift affects your mental capacity you should refrain from working it as it must undoubtedly affect your performance, but that is not cause for me to try and make something of it except to point out that you may be just as guilty of abuse as you consider me to be.

Both cakes are magnificent!
Touching on what others have said, I keep my enthusiasm for LU either to here or to when I visit The Capital..... The wife really isn't too aware of it, so everyone is happy!

My wife just thinks of my interest in LU as a harmless hobby. She has happily supported me in this for a long time. Perhaps she is less keen on on London since the 7/7 attacks.
I'm not supprised that there are many couples working for LU - Royal Mail is the same. I think it is partly because you spend so much time there, but also because it often attracts the same type of person!

I can't let that go without a reply! There's nothing sexist or patronising implied or expressed! As far as I'm concerned we are all equal regardless of race, creed, colour or anything else. I took offence at the language you used - "little woman" "wifey" "her indoors", the assumption that a (presumably male) LU shift-worker has a wife at home waiting for him.....yes that is sexist. You might say you believe we are all equal but the viewpoint expressed by the language that you used says something different. I've worked for LU for 12 years as guard, driver, signal operator and now line controller. If I had a problem working with/mixing with men then I'd sure as hell be in the wrong job. I get along well with most of the guys I work with (and socialise with them too) but I do expect to be treated equally and given the respect I deserve for the job that I do, not patronised because I am a woman. For the most part I get that respect, because I am competent and capable, and don't kick off about every little bit of nonsense. But sexist comments and attitudes, in a male dominated workplace (and indeed a sexist society) are common indeed - I just choose to pick my battles because otherwise I'd have a row with someone every day at work, and I can't live like that. My point about nights was that I'd just got out of bed - lots of people are grumpy when they first get out of bed - and after my first night shift I never get enough sleep as my body clock is out of whack. Rotating shifts are actually harder on the body than permanent nights, because your body clock is always trying to re-adjust. And on the shift work point - yes it is hard on your life, as are the realities of some of the jobs we do. I separated from my partner of 14 years 4 months ago and I do think the job was one factor (although far from the only factor) in the breakdown of our relationship. So yeah, I take your point absolutely about that, I just think it could have been expressed without the need for sexist language.

railtechnician - Political correctness is nothing more than expressed respect for other people. If you can't see that then I'd respectfully suggest that you've not properly thought about what the term actually means, but are instead passing off as your own the views of certain right-wing tabloids. The use of "little woman" is crass in any context and you should be man enough to admit it. Back on topic, the cakes do/did look great. I'd be happy with a train made of icing but happier still if it was made of marzipan! THC

Mine did have marzipan in them, but AFAIR it was mainly icing - the pic makes them look bigger than they actually were. BTW, it was tasty ;D ;D ;D ;D On a serious point regarding the other subject in this thread folks - in my capacity as an admin, I have read the comments thus far and as such the admins will continue monitor whats said as it is getting rather personal..........please try to stay friends

There is much I could say but I will not waste my time where I have been accused, found guilty and hung drawn and quartered. Where's the respect in that? It's a rhetorical question, no answers required. Subject closed as far as I'm concerned.

Easy chaps Unfortunately being an internet forum, being unable to see the 'white's of each other's eyes' it can be difficult to gauge when someone is being intentionally offensive or not and consequently its all too easy to take objection to a comment. Many members here have crossed words (as opposed to swords) in the past in different threads and just because I'm an Admin doesn't mean that I'm any more immune in this.... At the end of the day we're here because of the Underground, so please lets not fall out... if you need to, please agree to disagree
