Good morning
I have a couple of questions relating to the E-O service:
Before the Epping~Ongar service was closed, did the Epping~West Ruislip services always only depart from Platform 2 (with the Ongar shuttle on Platform 1), or was Platform 1 sometimes used by Epping~London trains?
Secondly, which depot did the first Ongar service of the day start from? Was it Loughton?
Sorry if these questions have already been answered!

London trains used both platforms at Epping and remember, they didn't always go to West Ruislip. The Ongar shuttle train was usually stabled at Loughton overnight, but returned to Hainault depot between the peaks for maintenance. When there was an all day service, I think that the train was changed over during the evening.

For the peak only service: The first train started from Loughton and ran in service to Woodford on the last westbound morning trip. It then ran empty from Woodford to Hainault. For the evening service the train ran from Hainault depot empty to Woodford where it ran in service to Ongar. On the last westbound trip the train ran in service to Loughton where it stabled overnight.
For the all day service: A changeover train, ran if required (train 172) left Hainault depot empty around 15.00 then passenger from Woodford to Ongar, with the train renumbering to 171 at Loughton. The all day train (train 171) ran passenger from Ongar to Loughton where it detrained and renumbered to 173 and ran empty to Hainault depot via Woodford. The changeover usually only took place once a week, unless a defect was reported. For the rest of the week the crews doing the changeover had an early day.

When they ran two trains in the peak and one all day,the first Ongar train left Loughton very early, around 04:10.The second train left Hainault(GH) around 06:15 and made its' way to Ongar. After the morning peak this train would stable back at Loughton, then go back on the shuttle around 16:00.The train that had been running on the shuttle all day would stable at Loughton after the evening peak, then run empty to Hainault around 23:30 so,in effect the units visited Hainault every other day.

So one train did the early morning + AM peak + interpeak + PM peak, another did AM Peak + (stable) + PM peak + evening service? And the trains would have alternated between the diagrams, presumably.

Looking at the Working Timetables, I would agree with you (can find almost all of them from 1970 [plus some from a lot earlier] onwards - can't comment on the stock diagrams though, but I think you're right).

The idea was to get the units back every other day so that if they were due for maintenance, esp if the said maintenance was only done at Ruislip such as shed day)the unit could be changed over.

I still remember 20 years ago running a test train to the Epping Ongar branch and "they" isnsited I took a possession with lookouts at both ends to protect the possession from intrusion. As the signalling only let one train in and the other end was a dead end, it was all a waste of time, but "rules were rules" and I wanted to get the test done!
