Record broken for Tube travellers More people use the Tube than the entire national rail network daily The record for the most people travelling on the Tube in a single day has been broken. An estimated 4.17 million passengers travelled on the network on December 7, compared with the previous record of four million on December 8 2006. On average, the number of people travelling on the Tube is increasing by about 7% a year. During 2006/07, more than a billion people used the Tube - the first time the figure had been reached. London's Mayor Ken Livingstone said: "The fact that the Tube is now carrying more passengers than ever before illustrates its crucial role in London's prosperity." He added: "Renovating existing lines and building the Crossrail will underpin London's economy for decades to come. "The significance of that is shown by one simple fact - every day the London Underground carries more passengers than the entire national rail network." I'm actually surprised the network carries more people than NR but it does show that the money for PPP is really needed. Heres the link news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7161528.stm

Both dates are the first Friday in December.
Late night revellers from xmas parties taking the tube home instead of driving is my guess.

Well the Moscow Metro has 8 car full-sized broad guage trains which are 160m in legnth, compare that to the longest in LU which is the tube sized Central line 1992 stock which measures up to 130m (?) and then let's not forget the 90 sec headways, compare that to a train every 2.5 minutes on most lines here (it'll get better...) and then compare the gigantic Stalinist stations compared to a cramped Victorian station like Covent Garden which has four lifts and narrow passageways designed for small people. Oh yes, let's not forget Moscow has 10million inhabitants compared to London's 7million, and much denser suburbs.
And i'm also wondering whether Moscow's bus network carries 6 million daily, as many take it because it's cheaper, or maybe they're claustrophobic... What's Moscow's suburban rail network like?
And there you have it!

How many rail stations are in Moscow that are not Metro - i.e. like National Rail in the UK. Also, what is the bus network like?

Both dates are the first Friday in December. Late night revellers from xmas parties taking the tube home instead of driving is my guess. Plus people visiting London for the weekend. Must be honest, was surprised that LU carry more than the entire NR network - but when you look at mainline stations such as Doncaster only carrying the same number as a quiet outer London tube station I suppose it's not that difficult to see.

I don't believe the statistic, I think what is meant is 4.17 million passenger journeys and that does not equate to 4.17 million passengers! I suspect 2.5 million passengers would be more realistic.

It seems to me that for transport they always count journeys not passengers, because, in global, could anyone care if he carries one person three times a day or three different persons one time a day each?
