I may be very ignorant, but here goes:
What is a barge board? What are "pointy-down spikes"?

I presume they're talking about these, but the more pointy ones?

This was just the style i believe for the GER. Since this was originally a GER station. Of course with Ongar closed and that route cut back along time ago. What we call the East end of the Central line would of been the mainline through to Chelmsford! EXPRESS!!

It was always of my opinion the said board offered some additional protection to passengers boarding and alighting from trains on rainy days, and that the 'points' were there for the rain to drip down off of?
or it could have just been because they were a nice decorative feature? ;D

I suspect it's more decorative. This is one of my favorite examples on the DR (screenshot of my virtual rendition).

As you can see from Dr. Jimi's pic the Southern Railway and its constituent parts always had decorative boards. Many of them have sadly been shaved or have rotted away since privatisation which I feel is a shame. It's another bit of character thats disappearing.

This was just the style i believe for the GER. Since this was originally a GER station. I do believe this man has the answer. Each major company (pre 1948) had its own style and we are in GER territory here. As to why all the companies chose "pointy down things" the drip theory may well be correct, but if so I have learned something too.
