Today's Sydney Morning Herald front page had an "exclusive" about plans for a metro railway. Quite extraordinary that this has been announced now, given that the NSW Government does not have an election coming up. The story was illustrated by a photo of an LU train and station, worked over a bit. It is perhaps unfortunate that the destination indicator of the train reads "West Ryde" while the one on the platform reads "Balmain". Maybe the same equipment as used on the Picc.

It would certainly be helpful. The train shown may be a short turn mate.

I didnt think Sydney was that bad traffic wise when i was there a couple of months ago. Certainly nothing compared to London! Ferries seemed the best way to get around.
Awesome city though.

If this does go ahead, I wonder if they will go for modern driverless technology?

If this does go ahead, I wonder if they will go for modern driverless technology? It's a Labor government: the unions would not allow driverless trains.

On many driverless systems, the staff are redeployed into more customer service orientated roles. An example being Paris Line 14 where the unions would not allow for less staffing than conventional lines.

How about going for CBTC? Any new metro should now be using CBTC signalling, and if you get CBTC on a newly built system, you might as well go driverless!

True, but then as sydneynick says, the unions aren't going to let it happen!

I don't think that planning has proceeded any further than an announcement by a politician. It is unlikely that anything will be built.
Don't forget that the Bondi line was proposed in the 1870s. Construction started in 1952, and it was opened in 1973.
