Did anyone see that programme on BBC4 last night about the suburban system of Bombay? What an amazing system. Part two is on tonight, 8pm BBC4 (digital/ Sky) if you get freeview or freesat, you will get this. Going to India was always an ambition of mine, the railway system is just Also o be seen are various Ashok Leyland PD3 buses, based on the Leyland Titan double decker of the 1960s, along with other Asok Leyland single deckers, which I suspect are based on the Worldmaster chassis. Don't forget the Hindustan Ambassador cars (mostly taxis) which are based on the 1950s Morris*. Someone really should do an enthusiasts video about all this stuff! *I think it was a Morris anyway.

I saw the programme some weeks ago on BBC2. It has interviews with a motorman with the same cynical view of life as we used to. Good programme. The taxi was a Morris Isis in its original form I think. Oracle will know. If you go to India, take a cork. The food is terrible and water undrinkable. Every time I've been there I've been ill despite taking all the usual hygiene precautions. An airline pilot once told me that, in India, happiness in a dry f**t.

Any idea on the age of those EMUs?
If I went to India, I just know that I would get sick, I even managed to get sick in Lisbon when I went tram bashing 20 years ago.
Did you see the other set of programmes about the railways during the monsoon season? I love the re-building of that causway. They don't do H&S in India!

TP: I would say that it was a Hindustan Ambassador most likely...the Oxford tooling was sold in India, as was the Rover SD1, and Monego Estate, et al. The engines are Isuzu units I gather now. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindustan_Ambassador

Whilst I wouldn't want the laser eye surgery, I would like to visit India. I hope you have a successful/ interesting trip.

I saw the programme some weeks ago on BBC2. It has interviews with a motorman with the same cynical view of life as we used to. Good programme. That driver was brilliant, I like one of his quotes "They work us like bloody donkey's, no time for tea", he could have been working for LU with that comment. I saw this a few weeks back as part of the 60th anniversary of independence celebrations. The first part was the better. Part 2 had a bit too much jangley music for me as it was mainly about a railway employee who is also an actor and a caterer getting a contract to cater on the long distance services..

I didn't see the car but the modern taxis were Ambassadors based on the 4-cylinder Oxford, not the Isis (6-cylinder). The tooling was sold by BMC from Cowley to Hindustan and seems to have worn out years ago! There were some Ambassadors imported into the UK a few years back.

Don't forget the Hindustan Ambassador cars (mostly taxis) which are based on the 1950s Morris* Ambassadors are a Delhi thing though - the last few times I've been in Bombay I don't think I've even seen one Ambassador (they used to be used as government cars, but even the officials now tend to use modern designs). The Bombay taxis are all Padminis, which are based on the same Fiat design that became the Lada...
