Today somehow my Lobster Card failed. This greatly confused the CSAs because it had been working half an hour earlier, it's less than a month old, and it's been safely stowed in it's wallet in my back pocket. My question is thus:
You know how you get your money back on pre-pay, can you reclaim travelcards the same way? When my old Oyster Card was stolen [grrrrrr] I couldn't claim it back because I didn't exist on their system [even though I had my face printed on the card 'cos it was a 1/3rd off university one]. I'll be really ****** off if I have to buy three monthly travelcards in the space of 5 weeks to cover theft and TfL system failure. So will they give me a new one, or will they give me some prepay moneys to make up for it, or will they tell me to eff off? Tomorrow it's 'Bow Road Ticket Office Failed Oyster Roulette' although if you lots can help me with some inside info that'd be exciting and handy!

As far as I'm aware you fill out a failed Oyster card form which asks how much was on the card - prepay and travelcards; they don't actually have a way of checking at the ticket office, so take it on good faith, then if you've claimed anything really wildy over the top when it gets back to Oyster central, they stop the card. Taking ID along as proof of address and any receipts you still have may help a little. I don't know precisely what they will and won't allow. Registering your card tends to help with regaining lost travelcards/prepay quicker, but doing it now is a bit of a case of latching the door after the pony's bolted, and I know a lot of people have issues with the idea of registering. This is just taken from my observations of how it works from a CSA's point of view, none of it's gospel but it may be helpful if no-one else can elaborate at all.

Not forgetting staff as well To confirm what undergroundgal has already said: Obtain and complete a Failed Oyster card form. Take the I.D. as mentioned on the form and take any receipts you have to confirm what tickets you have. Official procedure is for staff to simply load what you've mentioned on your form, but some booking clerks may phone the Oyster helpdesk which may delay your transaction if you don't have receipts. As the card is failed the replacement procedure is far simpiler than a lost/ stolen card.

it's been safely stowed in it's wallet in my back pocket. There's the cause of your troubles. I would say 98% of failed oysters (and I've happened upon quite a few in my line of work!)are ones that are kept in a back pocket. When you sit on it it bends ever so slightly, but enough to break the antenna that is embedded near the edge of the card. Shoddy ill-thought out design maybe, but it's almost certainly why your "Lobster" is broken!

But I kept my old one in my back pocket and it was fine for 10 months 'til I lost it, this one breaks after less than a month!
