Does the underground also use conductors/guards in the trains to assist the motorman/driver?

Not anymore, all lines are worked as One Person Operation. The last line to have guards was the Northern line, guards finished here when the introduction of the 1995 stock was completed in 1999.
The RMT union would like to see Guards re-introduced on the Underground.

Couldn't remember whether it was 99 or 00. I'll go and beat myself senseless with a 59TS guards bar for not knowing that!

Second that. After the july 7th bombings, there was a call for guards to be re-introduced, but it fell on deaf ears. An extra member of staff on the trains would be a good idea. I am sure the guards job becoming obsolete, was not purely on financial grounds. ;D

An extra member of staff on the trains would be a good idea. Are you REALLY sure, tubeboy? The t/op is enclosed in his nice warm cab, with a locked door between him and the cattle. A guard is open to all the abuse the public can throw at him, unless he is locked in the back cab - in which case the object is defeated. I'm quite sure that in the (totally unlikely) situation of guard reintroduction being discussed, Bob Crowe would be insisting on TWO guards per train, particularly late evenings. Staff protection is a serious issue these days.

The Squarewheels Link to the Last 1959 Working showed a 'box like attachment' to the passenger hand grips in the cars.
What are these ?

From the text acompanying the picture:
"The whole 1256+1187 train has for some while been kitted out with special strap-hangers which advertise NutriGrain cereal bars; a few had presumably been damaged and so the occasional plain grey one was to be found."
First time I've seen that done - didn't look 'right' somehow.

NutriGrain Hangers. Thanks very much Dr Jimi. sorry - I missed that bit. Don't apologize - it was easy to miss. I recalled it being mentioned in the prose, so quoted verbatim as I felt the subject was sufficiently unusual to be interesting to anyone who hadn't seen/read the article. My apologies to you if the style of my reply inadvertantly provoked your apology ;D
