The amazing thing is it's only 5mph slower than the maglev record: I bet the French were aiming at that really (or next time...)

It would be great if 300mph rail service actually becomes reality!

Great day for the railways, and a bloody nose for the airlines. ;D

Imagine that on the Tube. Might have to entend the short overlap a tad, eh?

Yeah, considerably. ;D
Cant see the point of speeds above 75mph on the tube, even then, it would only be handy on the Met.

Back to the topic.... I notice though that they did it with a shortened train - so it wasn't a 'proper' TGV!! Typical French to cheat

There was only one British reporter on the train for the test and when i heard him on Radio 2 news on the way to work this morning he said he s**t himself. At one point the train actually felt it was lifting off the rails. I suppose any imperfection or subtle gradient differences will certainly be exagerated by the speed of the train. I also noted they upped the voltage from 25kV to 31kV for the attempt may be to overdrive TGV itself. I wonder how long the control gear would last on that voltage.

Certainly the 'sparks' from the pantograph were noticeable...

Certainly also, there was a considerable amount of horizontal movement of the pantograph contact wire, not to mention lots of dust being churned up from t' track...
Well done to all at TGV...

There were pictures on the news here, and it seemed that the train had three power cars (two at front, one behind) and two passenger cars.
A nice stunt, but not exactly practical or economic.
The best record, of course, was City of Truro at 103 mph with a service train, when management was not even looking for a record.
