The Oyster card stickers to personalise your card are interesting. I know of at least one member of staff who would confiscate such a personalised card. On a related note - some LU staff (not me ) are trialing an official Oyster watch. Expect it to hit the streets before Christmas. Haven't seen the redesigned Oyster card, but have seen the visitors Oyster card which looks rather good actually, better than the blue boring one.

Oyster watch - what, is the Oyster card integral to the watch?

Thing is, is that the Oyster still remains property of the organistaion that issued it - in this case Tfl. It's the same with personalising tickets too, as detailed in the Conditions of Carriage. Technically, an Oyster is not passengers property in the first place, and they shouldn't alter it in any way.

Does the new Oyster watch have pearl inlays, and is it water-proof? How many 'Clams' will they cost?

I presume the restriction is there to stop people fiddling with the internals, so people don't modify them so they system thinks its a staff pass or somebody else's card or something along those lines.

It's like most cards you 'own'. Bank cards etc all remain the property of the issuer and must be given up on demand. Tickets have always been sold this way. You don't buy the ticket but the right to travel and the ticket is a token or receipt.
My original comment was based on the fact that I know of at least one member of staff (probably more) who would take one look at the personalised Oyster and would confiscate it as it wasn't standard. The member of staff I'm thinking of even queried the new Visitors Oyster - and that was advertised in the Traffic Circular.
Although if you bought from a machine/ online nobody would ever see your Oyster Card would they.

I don't know. I know that with the right equipment you can modify the data on RFID cards, so it might be possible.

Without going into the finer details of an Oyster card - the rewards for anybody who could do so would be great. A similar problem occurred to Cellnet many years back when somebody cracked their system.

So if the card is property of TfL and I just pay a deposit, does that mean I can get my £5 back when my student lobster card expires at the start of september? It's got my face on it so I doubt they can recycle it though.

It's got my face on it so I doubt they can recycle it though. The £5 charge for Oyster photocards is not a deposit; it's a processing fee. To the best of my knowledge it is non-refundable.
