My handy little Pentax compact digital died this week What I want to know is, can I use the same SD card in my new (but not here yet) camera, which is also from the Pentax Optio family? I have removed any pictures from it, will it work? I really don't want to have to buy a new card (£££). Some more details... Old camera: Pentax Optio S, 3.2mp New Camera: Pentax Optio E20, 6.0mp SD card: 128 MB Thanks folks!

David,
Whilst I haven't needed to swap memory cards between cameras I had a similar experience with Pocket PC's.
The format of both my old and new was SD (so hopefully this helps!) and when I formatted the new device etc. I held my breath when I inserted the SD card...............
(Pause for effect.....)
IT WORKED fine!!
But - seriously - I think what I'd do is (if you can) download everything from the card before inserting it into the new camera. I use seperate card readers attached to my PC via USB as they're much faster than the cable from the camera route - and don't drain the camera batts either. They're not expensive and having downloaded this way you can then format the card in the new camera if that's what 'it' wants to do.
HTH!!

Dave is absolutely right.
You can't get "special" SD cards.

the SD card will work in any SD card reader or camera.
get your new camera and put in the SD card and plug it into the computer and they will appear. The camera might format it. What you should do is to put the little slider on the side to the other position to write protect it, so it can't be reformated.
SD card is a common standard, like CD or a USB flash drive, it will work with the new camera.

I really don't want to have to buy a new card (£££). You know they're only £4.99 for 1GB these days?

What you should do is to put the little slider on the side to the other position to write protect it, so it can't be reformated. This will also have the effect of preventing the camera saving any photos to the card.

Yeah, shouldnae have any problems. My little Samsung Digimax presently has a 256Mb SD card, instruction book that came with it said that the SD card MUST be formatted before any photos can be saved to it... I dinnae do this, and it works fine!!!

no, initially putting it into the camera and getting the photos off it and then, obviously, changing it back for normal use

Has anyone here actually bought a card this cheap, or are they like the eBay ones, which charge £10 for the card and £15 for postage from Hong Kong? David Edit: I just looked at that eBuyer link, total purchase price would be £12.03 for a 1GB card, which isn't bad IMO. Has anyone here used this lot before?

get the £4.99 one, they are good. I have bought one on the cheap from amazon and ebuyer and they aren't high speed ones but for cameras they are fine.

There is a standard for how digital cameras name their images, as my old Canon and current Panasonic use the X:\DCIM\000name format (name being either "canon" or "pana"). See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DCIM - although this isn't the best Wikipedia article

That includes a £4 premium for next day delivery. Switch to Super Saver and it's only £8.21. I've used them lots of times and every time I've used Super Saver they ship in a couple of days anyway.

I too have had good experiences with eBuyer, the only drawback being their appalling search engine to track down some of their stock. Other than that, brilliant.

Thanks to all who have helped me with this. I have decided to order a 1GB card from Amazon. It's £4.99, with postage came to £8.32.
