I had a little play with this earlier. Apparently you can get from Bristol to London for £0.05 with a Virgin Trains only ticket. From Bristol to London this means going via Birmingham to Euston and thus would not be quick - but if this is correct (and I doubt it is) it could be worth it if you have the time.

I couldn't find that 5p fare, but the Thurso to Penzance was eye watering. I wonder how many they'd sell A good bit of kit IMHO, should be available on the NR website.

I've seen something about the 5p Virgin fares being in relation to their Traveller scheme, which is a reward for regular first class passengers. One of the benefits is free travel in First Class at weekends, so perhaps the 5p fare is a token to give them a valid ticket.

The 5p fare is indeed part of the Traveller scheme, it's just an admin fee.

another thing I spotted was that there are some £999.00 fares, often "child flatrate fares" but one to really catch my eye was that it apparently costs this much for a bike ticket between Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket stations (1.5 miles apart, and almost certainly quicker to cycle between them than get your bike onto and off a train). I presume this figure means that the system knows the fare exists but doesn't know what price it truly is.

Now put the Penzance - Thurso journey into perspective; look at NRES online and see how long it takes you to get there, and also how many changes you have to make!
