When OPO was first introduced to signify to staff the train was OPO the train had 3 tail lights,left,right & stabling light.Now all trains are OPO,why do they still have 3 tail ights?

What was a stabling light for in the first place?
To show the depot staff if the train was being / going to be stabled or what?

A stabling light is a single low power lamp for use in depots and sidings to show that the train is there. Not all such places were as well lit as they are now. In fact many were not lit at all.
Before all stocks had batteries fitted (and a electric lamp installed) an oil lamp was used.

That correct. They are removing them as they replace the tailights with LEDs...
