Some American railroads are single track, so you only need one platform. Of course it could just be that the producer was too cheap to build a set with two platforms. Personally I don't watch too many new American movies because so many are mediocre wastes of time. Fortunately our local paper has a very good movie reviewer who is not afraid to call a rubbish movie rubbish so I seldom waste my money.

US movies which use Subway as a feature, either as a main part of just 'in passing'
The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3:- Hijacked subway train, robbers demand ransom for the release of the car and pax... Interesting shots of the Command Centre and signalling room...
The Warriors:- Rival gangs use the subway as a battleground.
Underground Terror:- Gang uses abandoned station as a hideout. while riding subway during day, robbing people.
Money Train - Two Transit cops get fired, because they interfered with the Money train, As an act of revenge, they steal the money train, but then can't slow her down, catch up with a service train, causing collison... The money train derails, [knocks out stancions supporting the street!!!] and they escape with wads of money...
Any more?

oh yes, Sandra Bullock...
passing scene in Superman, earthquake, shows bridge dropping out, rails collapse, superman bridges the gap...
Err, Cassandra Crossing, starts in Sweden, two people try to sabotage a research lab, but get infected, escape by train... infection spreads, train is sent through Basel over this bridge, which hasn't been used in xx years...it collapses when train passes over... features OJ Simpson...
The Swarm... mutant bees. infest a train in one scene, which stings the crew, they pass out from shock, train 'derails' [so obviously a '0' gauge set... with micro-cameras]

was it the 'untouchables' where they had that shoot out scenes on the stairways at grand central? also on the theme of yank movies, why are all brits baddies? is this a gripe from the colonial days?

The Untouchables shootout was filmed in Union Station in Chicago, not GCT (Grand Central Terminal). The two stations are very similar in age and style so you could confuse them. On TV not all the brits are baddies in "The Equalizer" the hero is played by Edward Woodward, and "Remington Steele" was Pierce Brosnan.
