I have a question for anyone who rides or drives London's buses. I have heard mention of an Oyster card, and understand how that works. But obviously not everyone has one. So what I would like to know is if I am going from point A to point C, and have to change buses at point B do you have to pay a second fare to board that second bus. Here in Canada you only pay once and if you are transferring to another bus futher down the road you ask for a transfer, which is a proof of purchase that is presented to the driver of the second bus so that you don't have to pay again. I can't ever remember seeing something similar when riding Birmingham and Derby buses, but that was some time ago. Can anyone answer this. The photo shows three transfers, one from St.Catharines Transit, one from Durham Region Transit, and the last from my town, Kingston Transit.

Taken from a T fL press release: On the buses:- The Oyster single fare will be £1 at all times
- For customers using Oyster to pay as you go, the daily price cap is frozen, which means you will never pay more than £3 regardless of how many trips you make in one day
- If you choose not to use Oyster, you will pay £2 for each single journey
- The One Day Bus Pass is frozen at £3.50 and the Weekly Bus Pass increases in line with inflation from £13.50 to £14.00
If paying cash or using Oyster pre-pay, you have to pay for each individual journey on each bus - as you'll see from above, you would only be charged for the first three journeys using Oyster pre-pay.......after that it's effectively free.

To expand on Colin's reply, it has never been London bus practice to allow transfers. Travelling as a child to my primary school, I had to catch a trolleybus for about 0.75 miles, then change to a bus for a bit under a mile. I had to pay 1.5 d each trip: 6d a day, which was not an insignificant sum.
London trams had extensive transfer facilities which is one of the reasons why LT wanted to get rid of them.
