At least there is a good reason for them to be out of service (breaks not working as they should be), unlike the trains First Great Western has taken out of service...

Admin hat on: Can we please stick to metro matters as per this announcement. As a rough pointer, metro in this context is defined as railways like LUL - so the New York Subway is fine, but Japan's bullet trains are not...................mainline / heavy rail should be relevant to LUL.

Here in Melbourne we like to think our Suburban Electric rail system compares to some extent with London's Underground. True, we only have three underground stations - each though with four Platforms (serving four groups of Suburban Lines) and the whole is integrated in the Zonal Fare system with the buses and trams. There are 14 (?) separate termini.. and most have a 20 minute Off Peak service.

It is difficult to classify the various Cities' Railway systems particularly as the so called 'prime example'(London) is so varied). How can the Victoria line service - automatic and runing over a single shuttle- be likened to the Metropolitan service- joint with other lines to Baker Street and then providing a non-stopping service to Uxbridge,Watford, Chesham and Amersham ? What of the District/ Circle/ Hammersmith group ? Is this not more akin to the services out of London Bridge or Liverpool Street?. Naturally you may 'classify' the various Suburban Systems as you think fit but I think you are tending to 'split hairs' unneccesarily.

It's all in a name really . We concentrate on LU, nothing else. So, for example, Silverlink run 'Metro' services out of Euston, a lot of SouthEastern and SouthCentral services are metro in nature and of course there's the DLR, a true metro service if ever you saw one. But none of them feature here.
District Dave is a London Underground I/O and he set the forum up originally for other LU staff - the rest of us are (welcome) extras. So that's the guideline we use - it's LU, NOT TfL, and we try to apply the same principles worldwide as far as the forum goes.
Hope this helps.

Guidelines Used on the Site.
You are the boss and I am fortunate, indeed, to be allowed to air my views here. I do however feel the very diversity of the sections of the UndergrounD are part of its attraction- My favourite Met Line ( I lived at Harrow) has even managed to keep it's separate identity over all these years and doesn't look as though it is going to loose it for many more ! :-)

So it's OK to talk about toasters and food blenders on this part of the forum, but not other (non-metro) rail systems?
