They would be more intelligent than most station staff in Sydney. And they could catch the rats!

I had the good fortune to use the Tokyo subway a few months ago and I was totally confused by the fare system, selecting a button at random to issue me with a ticket to at least get me through the gates. At this point a member of staff appeared with a map, gestured to me to point to where I was going, took my ticket off me and selected the right one. He also gave me the refund of the difference. Also, because I was travelling off-peak, the trains were not crowded, the upholstery was spotless and there was not a scratch on the windows.
I am always hostile to the media this country seizing on the lies that problems that exist here do not happen in other countries. But I do have to say that my experience with the Japanese transport network (trains, trams and subways) was exemplary.
