For your interest, I've formulated a list of terminus loops that have been used on metro systems around the world. Only heavy metros have been included, not light rail or tramways where terminus loops are common. This is probably not a complete list, let me know if you know any more.
Key: NPL - Non Passenger Loop (Loop between arrival and departure platforms) PL - Passenger Loop (Passengers travel through loop)
In brackets is the present use of the loop.
Paris
Porte De Clichy NPL (Garage) Porte De Champeret NPL (Garage) Porte Maillot NPL (Part abandoned) Porte Dauphine NPL (Open) Charles De Gaulle Etoille PL (Single track -Open) Invalides PL (Garage) Porte De Clignencourt NPL (Open) Porte De La Villette NPL (Garage) Porte De Lilas NPL (Open) Gambetta ? (Garage) 7 Bis PL (3 Station Loop - Open) Nation(Line 2) PL (2 Tracks - Open) Nation(Line 6) PL (2 Tracks - Open) Place D’Italie PL (2 Tracks - Now converted to terminus with headshunt + garage) Porte D’Orleans NPL (Open) Porte D’Auteuil PL (Garage - Complex layout and history!) Villiers NPL (Abandoned) Gare De Nord (Part abandoned, part used for training)
New York
Hudson Terminal PL (5 Tracks - Replaced by World Trade Centre) World Trade Centre PL (5 Tracks - Open) City Hall ex-PL/now-NPL (City Hall station closed, loop still open) South Ferry Inner ex-PL/now-NPL (Platform closed, loop still open) South Ferry Outer PL (1 Track - Open) Brooklyn Terminal NPL (Abandoned - Terminus of Brooklyn Elevated Railroad)
Philadelphia
Fern Rock PL (2 Tracks - Open) 69th Street NPL (Open)
Boston
Bowdoin NPL (Open - Originally tram loop)
London
Heathrow PL (2 Station loop - Open) Kennington NPL (Open) Embankment PL (1 Track - Abandoned) Wood Lane PL (1 Track - Abandoned)
Toronto
Kennedy NPL (Abandoned - radius too tight, despite being newest metro loop!)
Chicago
Kimball PL (Loop abandoned, now stub terminus) Lower Wilson ? (Abandoned) 40th Avenue NPL (Abandoned) Desplaines/Forest Park NPL (Rebuilt - Open)

Melbourne's City Loop was built as four independant single lines serving four groups of suburban branches- Northern (inc.Western), Clifton Hill, Burnley and Caulfield. Most inwards trains proceed through the Loop calling at Flagstaff, Central and Parliament en route to Flinders Street (returning direct) in the mornings and run from Flinders Street via Parliament, etc, outwards in the afternoon and evening.

But Melbourne's City Loop, like Sydney's City Circle, is not a terminal loop in the sense of the others listed: it's more like a tiny version of the LU Circle Line.

It's a bit difficult where to draw the line between a compact multi station loop such as that on Line 7 bis in Paris, and reasonably compact city loops such as those in Sydney, Melbourne, and Chicago. Also I wouldn't be surpised if some of the latter would fit within the Heathrow Loop. So I narrowed the list down to monodirectional loops only. Would I be right in saying that the line to Sydney's Olympic stadium is also on a loop?

Yep. The loop line to Sydney Olympic park runs from Lidcombe out to Olympic Park and then back. There's a bit of a complicated junction back near Lidcombe too which allows trains to go to and from Olympic Park from either Lidcombe or the city. Here's 2 parts of the map for ya... Olympic Park Flemington Junction If anyone wants, particularly you Stephen, I can send you the whole .pdf file of the Olympic Park line.

Definition of a Loop.
True, there is a difference between a basic Loop (ie. Kennington) used only for turning the train round and one with stations on it ( ie. former Wood Lane, Charing X Northern, City Hall NYC, ) The latter type do at least 'earn their keep' -and there is no need to tip the passengers out.
I'm trying to work out where Hainault, Cathcart , Dartford and Catford fit in ! :-)

Definition of a Loop. I'm trying to work out where Hainault, Cathcart , Dartford and Catford fit in ! :-) Forget Hainault. It's never worked as a loop (they don't want the trains turned) and the terminus is changed at regular (every few years) intervals. Sometimes it's Hainault, sometimes Woodford, and sometimes Woodford-Hainault is a shuttle.

Are the Central trains not 'ambidextrous' like the A stock ?

PS- I don't think they have that trouble with the Dartford and Catford Loops :-)

For Paris some precisions: There is also a converted loop in Porte de Vincennes but only the old station plateforms are left. The Gambetta loop is used by the 3bis line (the departure half station is now the 3bis southern terminus and part) and a part of the old tunnel is used a junction between the line 3 and 3bis. The loop at Porte d'Auteuil is not exactly at Porte d'Auteuil itself but it is rather a whole loop from Javel to Mirabeau. The Villiers loop is used a garage but the rolling stock present in this garage is mostly composed of very old Sprague Trains which will maybe be refurbished one day. The loop at Place d'Italie line 5 will be fully functionnal and used to reverse the trains in the future as there is only a point which is missing.
There also used to be loops in the RER B line at Denfert Rochereau prior to 1896 and the extension of the line to Luxembourg.

Am I right in saying that Place d'Italie used to be the terminus for what is now Line 2, and then the layout was adjusted for it to be the terminus of Line 5? Also, when was reversing in the loop discontinued, and is there a date set for when it will be used as a loop again?
