Hello, Do you know the OTIS Servolift - a Cargo Transport System for Hospitals - the Cars have no Rails - only a Magnetic Stripe (... or something)! img160.imageshack.us/img160/1440/x14bx.jpg[/img] Picture 1: the Cars have Battery´s for the Engines - this is the Charger Shed. Picture 2: a Car under a Trolley Picture 3: Inside the Charger Shed - the white "Thing" of the bottom are the contacts for the Car. Picture 4: the Car delivery a Trolley to the Kitchen Picture 5: the Container Terminal with the Trolleys for Foods, Medical things and other hospital stuff Picture 6: the Hallway of the Hospital basement, in the background are the Elevator for People (on the left side (not of the picture) are the Elevator for the Servolifts) on the Central (with the Trolleys) the "Sidings" for the Trolleys can you seen the bulbs at the ceiling, when the Servolift uses this Way, flash the lamps! Picture 7: i think a scene for the Photographer ... Picture 8: the Workshop Have you seen this "Systems" on British Hospitals? sorry for my Bad english! greetings Dennis Wenzel

I don't know if such a system has operated in British hospitals but I can tell you how they work.
These 'transporters' are robots. They point a light down at the floor and that follows the lines on the ground requiring no human intervention except to set it on the right line to begin with. If someone gets in the way a bump sensor on the robot stops it.
Another system has cables buried under the floor that give off an electric current for the robot to follow, these are better because the robot can be directed anywhere without it having to be put on a specific line and only one cable is needed, also there isn't the visible lines all over the floor. The downside to this method would be that ground has to be dug up etc.

We have them, not in hospitals but in factories to deliver components to production lines.

In the NHS we have under-paid and under-staffed porters to move things about instead of robots!
