Tunnels don't fall by themselves - some unnamed morons drove a concrete pillar through the tunnel. There was no fire or smoke. Currently, service between "Sokol" and "Rechnoy Vokzal" (Line #2 - green, northern extremity) is suspended due to the emergency repair works.

I don't generally view this board, but I just saw a 60 second news clip on one of the BBC channels and came on here when I realised what this thread was about (it's not too obvious from the home page, and I don't use the view recent post's option). Blimey!! No one hurt? that's very lucky all things considered. Thanks for the pics Dimitri (links working fine ) - it helps to put it into perspective after reading news reports that like to sensationalise story's.

The full story from the unofficial "Sokol" depot site: 19.03.2005 at 14:27 an accident happened between "Voikovskaya" and "Sokol" stations. Driver of the Train 31 noticed a foreign item on the tunnel roof and applied an emergency brake. The "item" damaged the driving cab and scratched the side of the train. At first it was thought that the tunnel collapsed. After the brief investigation, traction current was discharged, passengers were detrained and led to the "Voikovskaya" station. Whilst train was stationary, two concrete piles were driven through the car number 6, nailing it to the tunnel. There were no injuries or fire.About 10 passengers seeked psychological assistance. Fortunately, no one has been injured or killed. A view on the construction site. Totally, 4 concrete poles penetrated the tunnel. Normal service has been resumed this morning, but repair works will continue for come time.

That line from Dmitri’s quote really takes the biscuit – like it was some kind of trapped worm!
It was a good job that the service was intense enough that the first pile penetration caused only minor damage to the train and no injuries. Had they succeeded in putting all four concrete piles down in front of the train it is unlikely the driver and some passengers would have survived. How the BBC can infer that this incident can be related to ‘failing infrastructure’ I do not know. If someone tried the same pile driving trick anywhere on the Circle line it would achieve the same result.

Similar thing happened near Redbridge a while back. The M11 was being built, and they were driving a test boring drill, which pierced the tunnel. A 62ts smashed into it, wrecking most of the DM. The drill stove a gouge just avove the drivers head. If he'd been standing.... Apparently, the contractors failed to realise just how far they were digging, or failed to look at the surveys correctly.

Thanks for posting those pics, Dmitri, and putting the record straight. The BBC ought to know better.
Just think, before Glasnost and the end of Communism in Russia, I doubt we would have known about this at all.

To tubeoperator92: nice to hear it works now . WRT the BBC article - I don't know if they used an inadequate information, were too quick to jump to the conclusions or just were in a desperate need for sensation . As I think (and I hope that drivers will agree with me), under those circumstances, first and foremost was detraining passengers and leading them to the station, and not in-depth examination of the stuff overhanging from the tunnel roof. Last night, the affected part of the line closed an hour earlier (0:00 instead of 1:00) to continue repair workings. Daytime service is not affected. Legal proceedings were instituted against the company that carried out the unauthorised construction works.

Desperate need for sensation is the most likely answer. It's been a bad week for news in the UK till today (the non-budget by the Chancellor).
