I picked a few bits of information up about Sardinian railways whilst over there which may be of intrest to some people. Basically trains are non-exsistant. There is a couple of lines joining larger towns but nothing exciting. The trains they use are steam ones from the early 1900's. There are narrow gauge and single track. They are incredibly slow. One service runs from the middle of the island to the south and will take about 6 hours. It would take 1 or 2 hours to drive. They are, however, very scenic railways and appeal more to tourists rather than a practical means of transport. For some reason (unknown to me) you can take the above mentioned train but can't return on the same day. Once you're off you can't get back on. And that sums up the trains! I didn't see one at all, but there are much more intresting sites if you get my drift (A very good vantage point for Gatwick Station is flying in. The tracks are right at the end of the runway when you are flying low you can see points, signals and trains for a long way!)
