Away from the troubles that we're experiencing in London, I thought you'd all be interested to know about this topic.
I've received an email from Harry Harrington who's a Train Operator on the Lexington Avenue Line. Although Harry is of Irish extraction, he converted to Sikhism many years ago and, as part of his faith, wears the traditional Sikh turban.
Until recently, this has not been a problem, but for reasons that I haven't been able to fathom out, his employers have decided to say he cannot continue to wear the turban as it does not form part of his normal uniform.
The following is a clip from the email I received from Harry a couple of days ago:
" I work in the New York city subway system on the Lexington ave. line for
about 14 of my 21 years. I'm a convert to Sikhism and just recently the
Authority started to say I couldn't operate trains in passenger service
after I had done it for 21 years."
Also included in the email was a link, and I've done some reading of the site, and read more about Harry's situation - have a look at www.sikhcoalition.org/MTA_Sikh.asp Have a read of the content of the page, and those leading from it. Leading on from that is a petition, and I've signed it, as I feel this is a wrong that needs righting - I hope you folks do too and will follow my lead.
I think all of us who work on London Underground know several Sikhs and I can imagine the uproar if LU was to try a similar approach! I can say (for the benefit of those of you who don't work for LU) that LU actually provides material in corporate colours to enable Sikhs to wear the turban and dress in corporate colours - this seems a far more enlightened approach.
By the way, the reason for Harry's mail to me was not to drum up support for his cause and perhaps at some later time I'll tell you more on this - you'll have to be patient, at least for now!
