Gents Having just read SydneyNick's thread about a two-car unit on the Northern Line districtdave.proboards39.com/index.cgi?board=northern&action=display&thread=1144882073&page=1 got me thinking ;D ;D ;D This is probably a borderline Historical query, but I thought as it was a general question, I'd stick it here Does LU still have any of the 38 or 60 stock units in use (tunnel cleaning/weed killing etc.) ? If so; how often are they used and where are they normally stabled..? Also what are their likely replacement/withdrawal dates?? Thank you Regards Christopher

i have seen a yellow 38 in Lillie Bridge Depot in the past, 4 Car i believe but not sure on that.
There is also at least 1 pair of 60 DM's with a 73 Trailer that is the trach recording train i believe.

There are two pairs of 1938 stock DM's still in the service fleet, one pair are part of the five car tunnel cleaning train, the other pair form the two car weed killing train. There are two 1960 stock DM's (pilot motor cars) and a 1973 stock trailer that form LU's track recording train which are going to be replaced by a four car unit of 1972 MKI stock. www.trainweb.org/districtdave/html/engineers_trains.html See this link for more info and photos.

The 1938 stock weed killing train is not in use any more, it may be stored some where on LU.

They may be using it for shunting, however the last i heard was that it was awaiting scrapping, but needed jetwashing off to get rid of any trace of weedkilling fluids. As for other stock, there is a 62ts sandite train that is used on the central, and then there is the pilot unit, and a few other carriages here and there !

Is there a problem with the weedkill train, or has it just been superceded by other means of control?

The 1938 stock weed killing train is not in use any more, it may be stored some where on LU. It would be nice if the LT Museum saved it, if only for spares.

I noticed that there appears to be the start of a distinct lack of space at Acton Depot, it'll be fun in the next few years, A, C, 67...... the list is going to be big.

Indeed.
I wouldn't be surprised if CHTL was the last preservation group permitted to store rolling stock on LU property - the 4-TCs have already departed, Sarah seems likely to do so as well, and unless Acton can be expanded to cover the open air roads, I have a feeling that when the older stocks start disappearing, they may be forced to dwell away from LU metals.

Trouble is at the moment, a lot of the stuff from the main museum is there, taking up space. I wouldnt be surprised if they get more space to store things in.

I think the LT Museum should save one DM car of A,C,D,67,72mkII,73 stock each. Thay could put the 72mkIi car back to back whith the 72mkI DM to show the diffrence between a non refurub and a refurb ;D but I hope that Cravens Heritage Trains saves a four car unit of A60 stock in working order.

I hope that Cravens Heritage Trains saves a four car unit of A60 stock in working order. I used to get on these units when I was going to school at Chigwell during the early/mid 80's - originally they were 4-car units using standard stock trailers in between the 60 DM's. Then when the pre-38 trailers became more unreliable/life expired they used a single 38 stock trailer painted white, becoming 3-car units. I'm not sure any 4-car Cravens units exist today I know the 3-car red unit with 38 trailer runs around somewhere as well as the track recording unit in new LU livery with (I believe) a 73 track recording car.... are there any others still in existence, or were the remainder scrapped.... anyone???

[glow=red,2,300]Herrrrrmmmmm[/glow] I meant A (60/62) stock the Metropolitan line trains ;D not the 1960 tube stock. There are only the four 1960ts DM's left.

MC might have been talking about the A60 surface stock, which was also built by Cravens. Theyre still going strong on the met, and if I had my way would be for quite some time to come One thing thats always irritated me about the use of the standard stock between the 1960ts dms was the fact the 4 months before they were withdrawn and scrapped, they were given a mini refurbishment. Funny to think though that the standard stock ultimately (as a collcective) lasted only 10years or so extra on the IOW then it did on LUL

The 60TS motors on the TRC actually have never been in passenger service since 1964,they were never modified for ATO,they were used as the rheo brake test train for years and then converted to the TRC,the motor coar numbers were 3910/3911.

If this had been the case LU might have refurbshed them in the early 1990's like they did whith the A stock insted of building the 1992 stock. runs away to hide

If there is anyone with good enough skills at photoshop/paint shop pro out there, I BEG of you to take up MetCams idea and make a pic of an entirely 1960ts train in LUL corporate livery
