Noted this as odd. Have seen for a few days Class 321's running in Silverlink County livery on C2C's tracks Enquiries reveal they have two units on hire. Because of stock training issues the use is limited. I gather it is generally on a peak only diagram and uses a pilotman. Yesterday I saw it heading for Fenchurch Street would have got there about 18.00 and the destination panel was showing Pitsea.

I know of one that did a shuttle (Manningtree?) but don't know if it's still running - then again, am I right in thinking mk1 rolling stock is not allowed on main lines any more?

All Mk1 units are banned from the mainline with exception of main line rolling stock granted an exemption by the HSE.
The only mk1 unit with a regular service with an exemption is the Mk1 units 1497 & 1498, running on the Lymington line. The class 321 has been around quite a bit and Silverlink can manage fine due to the 350s.

Two 321's are indeed on loan to cover for two 357's that had a mishap in East Ham depot. They are expected to be around for 8 weeks - though that may stretch to 12 weeks. Instructors only have been stock trained and their use is being limited to prevent clocking the milage up and thus causing the need for an exam.
Quoted from elsewhere:
"The exact timings I've been given, commencing Monday 11th Dec are as follows:
0608 East Ham to Fen St (empty) 0633 Fen St to Stanford le Hope 0727 Stanford le Hope to Fen St 0824 Fen St to East Ham (empty) 1748 East Ham to Fen St (empty) 1812 Fen St to Pitsea 1915 Pitsea to East Ham (empty)
My source has never let me down before so I'd say this is 90% likely to be true... just don't hold me responsible if it's wrong!"
EDIT: I should mention, these timings are provided by a c2c train operator.

Mk1 rolling stock can still run on National Rail as long as it is fitted with central door locking. Class 121 DMMU bubble cars are a derivative of the Mk1 and are permitted to run on NR.

So do steam - hauled railtours still run? I remember them always running with mk1 stock, so now I suppose they can run but using mk2 - upwards.

TheOneKEA - it's not quite that simple. Mk1s are banned from mainline franchised services because of their poor crashworthyness, as well as the slam-door issues. They're allowed on Lymington and Princes Risborough because these branches are signalled in a way that ensures there isn't anything for them to crash into...
Alex - I'm fairly sure mk1 railtours do still run; I'm not sure what the rules allowing this are.

If you read what I said again, I said "units". Coaching stock only runs on the off occasion on railtours and some passenger services (fitted with CDL). The reason the Lymington Line is permitted to have them, as said above, is the signalling (OTW), and also the fact that the line is pretty much completely isolated.
Companies running Mk1 coaching stock railtours all should have an exemption.

When the rules for mk1 stock on the main lines came in, where there any extra regulations for preserved lines introduced as well? Johnb touches on signalling, was this an area that has had to be altered by such lines?
