I have seen some fakes, forgeries and mis-descriptions in my time, but this just about takes the can for blatancy. Someone has put an item on ebay that is described as a 'Very old railway workers signalling candle lamp' It is in fact the same design that was still being made in the late 1960s and was used on LT by guards until at least that date. Some clown has taken out the wick mechanism, pushed a candle into the oil reservoir and is claiming that it is a rare candle powered railway lamp! it's herewww.ebay.co.uk Item number: 6620191915

Whatever next! The seller is obviously rather dim, as such lamps are attracting good money on eBay, providing some clot hasn't stuck a candle in them. I sold the innards of one, with burner and coloured glass strips for £25 on eBay recently!

I do like the look of item no: 6621108527, though. Good value - till you try to get hold of a new battery at reasonable price!

I wonder how much it'd cost to get a fat-arsed rechargeable one? EDIT: Come to think of it, why on earth would I need one of these things?! Damn eBay and it's powers of... making you want to bid on stuff.

Other than that I suppose you could use a night-light candle from Woolies. I wonder how long it would take for the flame to melt the coloured plastic filters?

I'm sure we all know a decent hardware store that can replace those filters. Failing that, go buy some colour acetate, and sell that and the lamp back on eBay! ;D ;D ;D ;D

I wonder how long it would take for the flame to melt the coloured plastic filters? Wouldn't it depend on the type of plastic? One of them burns, the other one melts.... but I suppose it's a matter of the temperature at which they begin to melt / burn? I do like the look of item no: 6621108527, though. Good value - till you try to get hold of a new battery at reasonable price! I'm sure I've seen some which have been converted to use standard size batteries...

Until the late 70's all stocks carried candles as an emergency lighting supply. It wasn't fire regulations that did away with them,it was improvements in batteries.

That's what I was thinking. I wonder how much it'd cost to get a fat-arsed rechargeable one? It would be cheaper to ask someone to see if they had a spare! The liely hood of that is next to nothing as they are hard to come by!

There is a genuine kit to convert your bardic from the big AD28 battery to four D batteries. The plug, which normally fits into the AD28, just fits into the converter. BTW, my Bardic is quite a new one (BR) and therefore has the yellow aspect blocked for some reason

the yellow aspect blocked for some reason Some grades, train crew comes to mind, had the yellow lens blocked. Thinking about it, it's only signallers and P-Way, who would need to be able to show a yellow aspect.

My Bardic shows red-yellow-green-clear. Comes in handy for bashing unco-operative bits of equipment... or hammering back signal post telephones that have 'just happened' to have fallen out of a concrete wall...

AFAIK, all Bardic's issued to LUL staff have all 4 colours. There are certain procedures where station staff acting as handsignal person's are required to show a yellow aspect as opposed to a straight green.

Are all members of LU staff issued with Bardic lamps? No. Only Train Drivers / DMTs (?) get issued them as part of their kit. Everyone else has to share them, as they are part of the emergency equipment on stations etc

Good value - till you try to get hold of a new battery at reasonable price! That's what I was thinking. I wonder how much it'd cost to get a fat-arsed rechargeable one? There's a way around that - it is possible to get an adaptor for a bardic lamp which takes three size D batteries. Not sure who supplies them though...
