I believe the many cables that one see's at the side of the track mounted on walls and on tunnel walls is known as the cable run?
What are these cables actually for?

Boy! This is gonna be a long thread. Just to kick you off, there are: Pneumatic air hoses for train stops/points and the like, Communication cables (fibre optic and others), Signalling cables, High Voltage cables for the traction current supply, Tunnel lighting cables The list is endless and I am sure members such as aetearlscourt can give you a much more complete run down.

Colour coded and very expensive to move. Where clearance is a problem they are fed into buried troughs.
What I find odd is that in the open sections are how close some of the post mounted cables are to boundary fences. I guess they're easier to access than being located half way down an embankment.

Yellow - AC main Red - Signalling Purple - Comms Orange - Connect Project
depending, of course, on the age of the run.

To me, this post seems to be getting very close to identifying the various vunerable cables that may be on the cable runs and might give away rather too much information to 'wannabe terorists when they grow up' or other yobbos who just want to **** up the works. Just tell them to try sawing through the big fat cables that come out of the sub-stations.

Just tell them to try sawing through the big fat cables that come out of the sub-stations. None of the lowlife in the UK have gone so far as to do something as stupid as that - fear of electrocution perhaps. But on NR it is by no means unusual for 'people' to cut out and steal several miles of signalling cable in one hit due to the price of pure copper over here.
