You may have seen this already elsewhere, but if not I thought I'd better mention that GNER is selling the unique class 89 locomotive as this is the only way it can be of any use to them any more. The AC Locomotive Group, which has cared for 89001 for some time, believes that theirs is the only bid for the locomotive that doesn't come from a scrap dealer. Therefore they are appealing for funds to make sure that this one-off isn't turned into a memory and maybe a cab or two. The NRM does not appear to have expressed an interest despite the status of this locomotive. Perhaps it's understandable because 89001 won't draw the crowds and it almost certainly cannot be run again (the AC Loco Group estimates a 6-figure sum to get Avocet in usable condition). They have until the 16th of November to raise the appropriate funds. More information here: www.aclocogroup.co.uk/project89.phpHere's an impression of how it might look if the Group does not manage to buy it: fictitiousliveries.fotopic.net/p34691234.html

I hope it is saved. I have sent a donation to them, please do so if you can afford it, otherwise another piece of railway history will be lost. Gner livery looks good on the 89!

perhaps we could pool our resources, make a forum donation and try and borrow the train sometimes? as some of us are staff we could get our new toy on lu metals and for those of us over 18 we could have some happy juice on board to celebrate our benevolence?

Have emptied my piggy bank [actually a Porcelain VW campervan], have bagged up quite a lot, [more than I expected] this will be deposited into my bank account, and the resultant sum will then be sent off...

Good idea Somerhimpson, though the donation would have to be huge to borrow it. The AC Loco Group allows people to buy shares when donations are £500 and above, where one share is £1.
As I count it, there are six people already who have donated (or intend to do it): myself, Tomcakes, ATO, Tubeboy, Somerhimpson and I believe that Aldwych may have donated too which is particularly generous as he's less likely to have seen 89001 than the rest of us!
There's also a simulation of 89001 available for MSTS now too, which may also help the appeal. Unfortunately, the AC Loco Group says it doesn't know what the successful bid will be, which might mean that the resulting bid is far too small.

The *full* value required has now been raised, but keep sending cash in as the scrap dealers may pull a fast one.

What are the chances of the owners upping the price realising that a load of money has been raised?

I can't see why they would do that - they ostensibly want to get rid of it ASAP...
