£5 is the commonly used lowest denomination of bank note in use in the UK, though there is the rarity of the £1 bank note, which is still in use in Scotland (I think).
(Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.)

The £1 bank note is, ironically, still legal tender in England although they are not permitted to issue any more notes. (any that are received can be swapped in at a bank).

I daresay the £5 note won't be in exsistence for too much longer.

There have been £5 coins on and off over the years, and are legal tender.
I miss the good old 10 shllling note! It was a lot of money to a young kid, when say 4d or 2p would buy you a packet of sweets.

There have been £5 coins on and off over the years, and are legal tender. My uncle used to be a Doctor of Metallics at the Royal Mint and he gave me a couple of five pound coins for my birthday. Went straight down the bank to pay them in!

The mint decided it was uneconomical to mint such a big coin for such a small fiscal value (25p), so now all crown sized coins (minted since 1990?) have a value of £5. The ones before this date are still only worth 25p, like the commemorative silver jubilee crowns. It is doubtful whether a £5 denomination will become a coin ever; I would dare say that by the time inflation reaches that point we will have got the euro.
