Not a season of ironic deaths i hope. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/5365676.stmTop Gear presenter hurt in crash
Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme. The presenter, 36, was taken by air ambulance to a Leeds hospital which has a special neurological unit.
A North Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said he was unconscious when they got to the scene but was regaining consciousness at the hospital.
A BBC spokesman confirmed the presenter had been injured during a shoot.

Oh dear. I suppose it's not that surprising when you see some of the stunts they get up to on the programme. I hope he recovers, I'm a big fan of Top Gear.

Steve Irwin's death was a tragic accident - he never set out to 'wrestle' with a stingray.
Richard Hammond, on the other hand, was taking part in something which I expect he knew was likely to end up in the scenario it unfortunately has.
That said, both of these guys have entertained me no end, and I would hate to see Richard go the same way as Steve did. I have the deepest respect for both of them being experts in their field, and very much hope that Richard will pull through.

The news this morning isn't much better, they are quoting "serious" head injuries, although he is stable in hospital.
His family are with him at this terrible time.

I was shocked when I heard at 9pm last night (Five news).
Hope he pulls through - he's just a very sincere and down to earth chap without the aircraft-hanger sized ego of some presenters.
The latest report features Jeremy Clarkson stating that motorists have wound down their windows and passed on their regards stating that they were "rooting" for him.

I was on TOP GEAR in May...got two precious tickets as Yours Truly does work for TG. It was the one with Sir Michael Gambon. I always liked Richard: a true family man and a biker to boot! Clarkson was filmed in a specially midified £35K Suburu car that had computerised steering control etc. which permitted him to drive around and around in tight circles...until he stopped and vomitted all over the runway at Dunsfold! Lovely film that.

Indeed - me and the lads at my school were giving each other progress reports on how he was doing throughout today. We were all pleased to hear he was stable, at least. Hope he gets better soon

Indeed.
Richard Hammond's short height may have saved him: he got mainly head injuries, so if more of him had been poking out of the top of the car, then he (or James May or Jeremy Clarkson) may have been fatally injured.

Unless of course the head injuries were caused by debris/car bodywork/scenery entering the cockpit (which is what killed Senna), rather than his head impacting with the ground.

Campbell lost his life and his head because he was overkeen. I went to Ullswater in Cumbria at the end of August and saw the photos and details of accident etc. Basically, they now say that the craft hit its turbulence from the previous run and not as has been suggested before, some debris such as wood floating on the surface. If DC had allowed his wake to subside he would probably have broken the record and had no problem.

It's just not worth putting your life on the line for entertainment or ratings or whatever justification one could possibly attach to this. I hope the BBC (and all other TV stations) take note for the future, if only (at the very least) to prevent a dead man's family suing them for compensation... That's a matter of personal opinion and judgement. If no one did any thing that others viewed as "dangerous" then we wouldn't have cars, trains and people would never have sailed off to explore the world. If some people choose to be boring, safe "stay at homes" then that's their privilege and right. However, there is nothing gives them the right to inflict their views on others. AIUI, more accidents involving death and injury occur in people's own homes than anywhere else.

Again, true. However, you don't fall out of bed, walk into a door, or fall down the stairs at 300mph! ...but if you go abroad you usually go at far over 300mph - AND off the ground!!!!! Crossing a busy road in the Capital is done at far less than 300mph, but is probably the most hazardous traveller movement in the universe!

One of the themes of Top Gear is the H&S Laws and how they impact on 'common sense'.
Presenters like Richard Hammond are grown adults and as such are able to make their own judgement. RH has a young family and he must take that into consideration when he decides to do these stunts.
From watching Top Gear, RH is an adreline junky and thrives on the challenges of speed, the fact he survived this 300mph accident (while us mortals risk death at speeds at a quater of that) proves that safety was considered.
0% risk is impossible.

I was on Top Gear in May, and you may have seen me twice on the TV. One of the perks of being a journo is that you come across other journos, and in my case a veru nice chap in the TG office. I did some research work for TG and was offered some tickets.
What you don't see is the filthy words coming out, and all three presenters can and do curse like a sailor, except that the backroom guys somehow delete it all. A lot of the audience there found it fall funny, but the three bods soon forgot that there were two kids there, against the rules I might add as there is a strict no Under-18s condition of entry to Dunsfold aerodrome where it's filmed. Those kids' ears must have wilted.
Anyhow, Mays is a very nice, quiet batchelor, Clarkson is Clarkson, and Hammond a very nice family guy who owns the Top Gear Dog, a Labradoodle. However he's clearly a petrolhead and he just has this desire to have a ball in extreme ways! He is a motorcylist as well.

The F-word was just one of a series of profanities expressed...but it was an Adult show, and it did stae onthe tickets that it was Adult for over-18s only. Why the security bods allowed the two kids in I'll never know as we had to give up our paper and get armbands for entry. Clarkson was in full flow when he saw the kids and then covered himself by saying to the kids that he was talking about a duck! However he soon forgot that they were there!
The best bit of the show was when Clarkson was shown to be vomiting on to the runway when he had been testing the Prodrive Subaru 4x4 small car worth £35K, round and round and round! Marvellous!

I remember that too, and didn't he try "zorbing" (or whatever it's called when people bounce downhill in a giant squishy ball) too? Their medical/life insurance must be very expensive!
