Surfing around WNXX today, under class 97 (which is reserved for any unusual trains that don't fit under any other section) I spotted 97750 and 97751, with an ID of L50 and L51. Are these LU battery locos with TOPs codes?

Surfing around WNXX today, Sam Good job we're easygoing, relaxed and tolerant round here, innit Sam? I know of other forums where to mention a different forum's name gets you banned. Not us though, we're cool about it! ;D ;D

Are these LU battery locos with TOPs codes? Going back to the original question...... L50 and L51 are indeed know as 97750 & 97751 on TOPS, this is a throw back to a couple of years ago (before the arrival of TPWS) when they did some work for National Rail at Moorgate Great Northern platforms, as NR didnt have any other form of motive power to take down there. This is not the only time they have been used, as they have been hired out to NR again, but they have been towed to site by class 66s. Hope that Helps Thanks to Ginster for the info....

Thought the following information might be of interest to be people following this topic. It is taken from Roger Harris' "Allocation History of BR Diesels and Electrics" 3rd edition (2005). It deals with the LT battery locos as listed on TOPS. I realise I am probably giving out info to people that know it already but here goes. The '97' series was allocated to Departmental locos. The book states that the following were added to BR Rolling Stock Library records from July 1993, allocated to HQ and hired by BR for use on engineering trains. The were deleted from the RSL records by 12/93.
The locos involved were L15- L32, L44-L54 and were renumbered (in same order) as 97015 - 97032, 97044-97054.
This was not all: In 2002 L15,L16,L19, were hired again and carried (or at least allocated) 69015,69016,69019. This seems a little odd as these numbers are in the type 5 diesel section...
Also in 2002 L17 was '17'. further changes in 2002 saw L20, L24-L27, L29 become 64020, 64024-27 and 64029. Again in the BR diesel series. Also seems a little odd that two different 'class numbers' were used or is it a misprint in the book and they should all be '69xxx' (or '64xxx') numbers? This was not the last of the 2002 hires in which a third 'class' series was introduced. L45, L46, L49, L52 became 73045, 73046, 73049, 73052. Further numberings for 2002 were L47 becoming '47' and the same applying to L51 and L53 becoming 51 and 53 respectively.
Another batch of locos were again hired out between 2000 and 2003 - this time to Network Rail for rail replacement work in the London area. The locos were based at West Ruislip depot. L15 becoming 97715, L20 - 97720, L22 - 97722, L32 - 97732, L50 - 97750, L51 - 97751, L52 - 97752 and L53- 97754.
All in all quite a strange array of numbering schemes. Does anyone know if these renumberings actually took place or was it simply a 'paper' excercise for the TOPS computer? I have been looking closely at the LT battery locos over the last few days (question to follow in a new post soon - sorry ;-) ) yet have never seen a picture of a loco so adorned. Would the locos require to be on TOPS where they ran over BR/Network Rail lines - such as Richmond - in which case would the D78 stock have ended up on TOPS?
Just to complete the story is an ex-LT pannier tank that is registered for mainline running. This carries its TOPS number on a small panel in the cab. Steam locos are classified as class 98 with the third digit denoting the power classification and the final two numbers to represent where possible, the same two final characters of the loco's revenue number. L99 (now 7715 again) - TOPS 98315
I have also discovered that 12 'Sarah Siddons' is allocated a TOPS number of 89212 - numbered in the privately owned D&E fleet. Looks a lot different to the other electric class 89...
I hope the above info is of use to someone and I'm sorry that as usual I end up asking more questions than I answer..
