Can someone please inform me if I am correct in my interpretation of the law here: The following road sign: means that buses and cycles ONLY are permitted? If it also has the word 'taxis' on, then taxis are allowed, but if not, then they're not. Following so far? There's also a standard no entry sign with the label 'except buses' under it. Again, am I correct in assuming taxis are not allowed to pass this? Why do I ask? Since I started driving buses again, I've had dozens of arguments with bloody taxi drivers who think they own the damn road. Bus lanes which are put in place to allow us to beat the traffic are usually jammed solid with taxis. I don't mind so much if they're carrying passengers, but when they're just blatantly breaking the law it annoys me! If Gateshead/Newcastle councils had camera enforcements like they have on London bus lanes, they'd make an absolute fortune. Apparently, because our buses have CCTV cameras fitted to the front of the vehicles, if we spot someone breaking the law, we can make a note of the reg number, make and model and the time. We then pass this to the police who send a fine out. I just need to check that I'm in the right about taxis not being classed as buses in the above cases first...

so you have to collect money, drive, doors and keep an eye on things aboard the bus. Well a driver was fined for eating an apple, but I am sure the police would be more sympathetic if you were on your mobile and then if you gave them a whole batch of revenue earning registration numbers.
The fact is doesn't say taxis means no taxis as I am sure that you and they know.

Yes Alan - just looked it up in Highway code. If taxis are allowed the word 'taxis' is written below the bus.

Get cycles out of the bus lanes! They are a bloody nuisance, If I was a bus driver I would be tempted to.........Yeah puncture their tyres! ;D

buses average speed in London is 11mph, my bike goes quicker than that. We only take up the double yellow lines at the edge.

well routemasters had an average of much more than 11, and they had cyclists.

It's not the amount of room you cyclists take up, it's the completely stupid and selfish way in which you ride; ie. veering accross roads, not stopping at red lights and mounting pavements. Muppets, the lot of you.
Alan, you are absolutely spot on. Make those taxi driving morons stay out of bus lanes. We had one in Northampton which was single width for buses only, I used to make the taxis reverse out, as I would block their escape. Tee hee.

going on pavements is totally unacceptable for anything meant for the road. Not stopping at red lights is a common thing but usually it is turning left where there is no traffic or if noone is crossing the road. veering accross road is one that confuses me, do you mean just not riding straight or gettting into lane?
We don't use up any oil and are better for the environment anyway and we get some excersise out of it.

no it is VEHICLE TAX. not road tax. We pay tax on food that keeps us going. if you feel this strongly about us cyclist you can go and have a demonstration on The Mall tomorrow at The Tour of Britain finale...

well you have to pay VAT on cakes which seems to be the official forum food, so then the government can have some money. But for the signallers biscuits are VAT free, which is why there is always a row over Jaffa Cakes that are biscuits.

Not stopping at red lights is just as moronic as mounting the pavement. You cyclists just think that the highway code is for everyone else. What about the prat who rode his bike on the wrong side of the road in a bus lane.... along Mile End Road! Saw it with my own eyes!

with red lights, if there is any traffic it is out of the question but if I am going for a Sunday Morning ride (a sunday rider) and I am waiting at a Pelican Crossing with nobody there I would probably go over it. Ashamadly but to have to build up momentum again is hard work, when you have petrol on tap it becomes much easier somehow.

You guys probably won't like this comment but my dad rides to work in the city on the bike to save 10mins on the tube and to save £30 a week on tube fares.

I sometimes use a bike when in York, and the drivers there are usually considerate. As for red lights, those nice green advance areas are very handy for turning right at junctions, and liberal use of the brakes means that complete stops can usually be avoided. The fools who go straight through, ride 2 abreast and other things which cause danger/make 4-wheelers jealous, give cyclists a bad name.
If road registration were free of charge, I'd get it and I bet many others would too. Charge for it and we'd all just claim that the bikes are bought for non-road-use only; how to police that? Path tax? Any unregistered users/bikes would rely on a policeman spotting them and take their chances, like illegal off-road motorbikes/quads, but cheaper to buy.
I don't know whether it's happened yet, but I believe the plan was to change the law so that if a cyclist has the option of a cycle-route, but does not use it, then any accident on that stretch of road if their responsibility, or something like that. Anyone who's ever seen those ridiculous "cycle lanes" that make a mysterious loop by the side of the road, only to rejoin a few metres later, will appreciate how daft that is. Likewise the "cycle lanes" which aren't even long enough to fit anything above a unicycle, or direct cyclists into lamp-posts or walls.
