Following yet more complaints about "astronomical" fuel prices from Americans on an email list I read, an Australian contributor has posted a link to a very interesting graph comparing fuel prices around the world (in March 2006), showing the proportion that is tax. Word fuel prices in AU$The Americans are currently paying between $2.80 and $3.20 per US Gallon of unleaded, which equates to 39.1p - 44.7p per litre.

But surely everyone knows that motorists are the most hard done people on the planet?

Just thought I'd throw my 96.7c per litre in, thats in the Niagara region of southern Ontario. Only trouble is the pricing can change a few times a day. Do the prices fluctuate as much over 'ome.

Certainly the petrol stations I drive past on my commute, the prices tend not to change more than a couple of times a week. Back when I worked in Bristol, there was one petrol station that charged 73.7p/litre for a good three months or so. Those days are long gone now though

We've gone from around the 98p mark to 94p round in Sussex. I filled up whilst it was cheap as its going to go up again soon apparently.

I've never seen it myself, particularly as a lot of garages use number-cards to show the prices, rather than a dot-matrix, so would be more difficult to alter. I don't recall seeing it change a few times during the week, never mind the day.

You can see sometimes the garage ladies coming out with the cards and shuffling them about. Then trying to remember the right price and make this up with the numbers they've got.

There is only one petrol station I know with a dot matrix display (the Morrisons at Cribbs Causeway near Bristol) - I went past there today and there was some problem with it as the price for LPG was flicking between 35.9 and 135.9p per litre! I presume that the lower price was correct as the unleaded was 91.9p/l.

I just filled up yesterday $2.89 US per gallon or about $0.73 per liter. The thing that astonishes me is how heavily gasoline is taxed. In the US there are almighty howls every time there is a proposal to increase the gas tax. Of course we are one of the most car dependant societies in the world. I just got back from visiting Bend Oregon, which is the same population as Beaverton Oregon where I live. Beaverton has dozens of bus routes, a light rail line and a planned commuter rail line, Bend has a minibus you request by phone. One gas station near me does have LED signs, red for gasoline, green for diesel.

One gas station near me does have LED signs, red for gasoline, green for diesel. That would confuse us brits. We use green for unleaded and generally black for Diesel.

We use green for unleaded and generally black for Diesel. I've also seen diesel as blue and yellow (although not both!). LPG doesn't seem to have a standard either as I've seen this as yellow, blue, black and red at various places!

Leaded was red at my local BP. Black for Diesel and green for Unleaded. Also got Autogas now, which is blueish.

Ours seem to be a Mix of Green, Yellow and Black for unleaded. It really depends on the station.

The convention in the US is that Diesel pumps always have Green nozzles while gasoline pumps are any other color. Blue is sometimes used for kerosene (paraffin) which is used in heaters and stoves.
