Good grief.
As for keys, either they've stolen them, or they've purchased them off eBay. You can get most things off eBay these days; J door keys, selector keys, uniform...

Do you need keys to start a shunter? Don't they just have an engine fire button, so it'd just be a case of them bashing the doors in.

You don't need a key to access a gronk nor start and drive it. They are the most primitive of all locos on the railway, consider their age and purpose. There has been various accusations flying around today in the industry about these youths being enthusiasts/spotters with claims of a normal being unable to get in and get the thing moving without any prior knowledge. I loved the Daily Star claiming "hurtling up and down the yard"..... at a full bore of 15mph in a gronk! Not quite hurtling but still potentially dangerous. Whatever next though, from people stealing headrests, graffiti to people actually effectively hijacking the things? Hope they get caught!

At least they weren't 'proper' joyriders so didn't actually set it on fire afterwards...

Particularly if they call upon a certain Arson Sam... ;D They must have been enthusiasts of some sort, like that lad in America that pinched a tram and those that crop up every so often who zoom around in buses for a while.

remember reading a few years ago about a group of [5] teenagers who nicked a loco from some yard near Sheffield [Knottingley???] managed to start the thing without a master key and drove it 'about 16 miles up the track'.
They got caught, because a signalbox was broken into and levers operated. They were given suspended sentence.

I didn't think there was anything still left Tinsley anymore - just very overgrown...

I didn't think there was anything still left Tinsley anymore - just very overgrown... It is still operational but not nearly as much as it once was and the yard is considerably smaller in terms of what is usable these days.
