I suspect though, when slammers came in, they thought of them as being like what you think of a desiro. Personally i dont see a problem with the desiros, they are actually quite spacious.

I don't see what's so neat about the newer desks, they look a lot more complicated! Why does everything have to be stuck right in front of the driver so he has a huge desk between him and the windscreen? I like the D stock's simple desk - much better view.

What's awkward about the layout of a C stock cab then? Apart from the cab light MCB being a bit of a stretch & the DVA being moved to a lofty height for short people (though it's only a temporary position apparently) - everything needed to operate the train is well within reach....

'Everything' as you put it, has to be stuck in front of the driver now as most trains are now OPO and all such on LUL. Therefore all the essential controls and dials etc must be within arms length and ergonomically situated. The non essential stuff can be on the opposite side of the cab. All District drivers know about the awkward layout of a 'C' stock cab as you know. No driver has 6ft arms. I agree that C stocks are quite awkward, having to use your right hand to reach across your left hand on the TBC to operate the windscreen wipers, for example. But D stocks seem to manage to have everything you need while moving close at hand whilst having very little actually right in front of you.

SWT are still all guards, so no OPO but it is there in case its needed in the future (but I doubt it due to the unions).

Whats wrong with using your right hand on the TBC and your left hand for the wipers? I personally think the C is nice neat and tidy and better than the D.

Because then you have to swap hands, with the risk of letting go of the handle and causing the deadman to operate. Or you could always use your right hand on the handle, but then your right arm is in the way of the whistle and radio transmit buttons. D stocks are a lot better because the handle is on the right and all the relevant controls are on the left, so no crossing of arms!

LU move customers from A to B, they used to do it via 'C'.

The 09ts has been designed to meet quite rigorous 'human factors' standards. Indeed LU were the first train operating company in the country to have a Human Factors Standard. The layout is logical and should go a long way in meeting the operators requirements. Only as recently as late last year did we ask for a change to the 09 layout due to a problem that we noticed on the mock up in Derby. I realise that the original question relates to SSR, but we are only at the design stage for the 'S' Stock cab now. Early conceptual designs are proving positive and Bombardier listen to our input as the concept develops. They are also taking lessons learned from the 09ts and applying them to the 'S', although we are cautious with this and make sure that they are aware that the SSR is a different beast to the Vic. We are also consulting with Trade Union Health & Safety Reps in order to ensure that Train Operators are consulted properly, after all it's their office. On the subject of current stock, the 'C' stock was originally delivered with the Whistle button where the wipers are now - Nightmare! Even today on an unrefurbished 'D' you have to get up to close the offside doors and have nowhere to put your cup of tea. As for the 'A' stock, try making a train radio call whilst braking, you come up one arm short!
