Kings Cross Fire: A carelessly discarded match caused the worst fire in London Underground's history, killing 31 people. How did this small fire erupt into a deadly fireball? From what I can remember (& this is from pure memory - so please correct me if I'm inaccurate), a discarded match/cigarette started a small fire below an escalator, fulled initially by grease (probably petroleum based) and paper started the fire, which then was fanned by a wind vortex created by trains entering the station via the tunnels below. This in turn resulted in an inferno on the escalator which erupted into the ticket hall above. I think 30+ people perished, one of whom was only identified in recent years. I can remember that night all too well. I was living in a boarding house at the time and was talking to one of the 6th formers in his room listening on LBC to regular updates. One result was that the old wooden escalators were replaced along with smoking being banned throughout the network - no bad thing.

It was a truly terrible day. I was only 10 at the time, but I remember vividly watching Southern TV News [as it was then!!!] and seeing horrible pictures.

I remember this too, I was only 6 at the time. I remember the TVAM news with Gordon Honeycombe and remember how I found the tv pictures really scary. As 92 says, it is a vivid memory.

I was doing my homework listenning to radio 1 when the news broke; I then switched on the 'Nine O'Clock News' to see the pics of smoke and people coming out of the KX entrance stairs. The next morning I bought a copy of 'Today' newspaper, which had colour pics of the devastation.
Just awful.
