I was wondering if any LU or ex - LU stock has taken part in tours across NR metals? A am aware of Gatwick Express stock on the DR in the eighties, steamers on the Met and also the stock transfers (although not public) to the IOW but not aware of a long distance journey (open to the public) on LU stock.
I was thinking a couple of battery locos could do the job, or an NR loco with match wagons. I realise this idea may not be feasable, but using battery/NR motive power could you still have lighting/heating etc?

There was once a railtour where a Mk2 rake top-and-tailed with LU battery locos went walkies on the SWML.

The South Western Main Line, from London Waterloo to Exeter via Wimbledon, Woking, and Salisbury.

Interesting. I always thought the LSWR's main line was to Exeter, not Weymouth or Southampton (the latter being of course the terminus of the original London & Southampton Railway, the LSWR's direct predecessor).

The LSWR may have considered the Exter line to be their main line, but SWT certainly consider the Weymouth line to be theirs. Their Network map shows it as a straight line from Waterloo to Weymouth with all the other lines branching off from it, the Exter line diverges at Basingstoke. Looking at their map it is interesting to note that Torquay is just slightly east of due north from Weymouth and nowhere near the coast...
