One for our (young?) computer experts.
Topic: updating drivers.
Have nVidia nForce card.
Current sound version is 5.10 Current video version is 78.01
Now, I downloaded (but not installed yet) the following from nVidia today:
Sound - version 4.62 (aug 05)
Video - version 81.98 (feb 06)
Am I right in thinking the sound download is actually older than what's installed already? And if so, where did I get 5.10 from seeing the card itself is 18 months old!!!
Also, nVidia state you should uninstall all current drivers before installing the new versions. Is there a safe way of doing this, just in case the wrong components get uninstalled?

The current version seems to be older than the downloaded version, I am unsure why this would be.
Normally with drivers you have the option to 'roll back' with Windows XP, this will allow you to revert back to the previous driver if something goes wrong. Most driver installations go fine anyway, but the capability is there to roll it back.

With nVidia drivers it's just a case of going into Add/Remove Programs and uninstalling the drivers, then rebooting. Once the desktop's returned (in a pixelated form! ) run the new nVidia installation package, and then reboot once again to complete the process. As for the sound, that puzzles me too. Can't give an answer on that one, apart from the generic 'Are you sure it's the correct driver?'. The graphics is the more important one though, you can usually live with fairly old sound drivers for a long while before they need replacing (usually when a new DirectX version arrives).

Phil - you probably have a mainboard with the "nForce" chipset on it - this controls various other components on the board.
It also requires drivers. nVidia release a combined "Unified" driver which contains, amungst other drivers, a sound driver. The current version of the Unified driver is 5.10, _but_ the sound driver it contains is 4.42.
As you've obviously been to nVidia's website, you've found the latest version of the audio-only driver is 4.62, which is a later version than the audio driver included in the Unified driver.
In short terms - 5.10 is the "umbrella" version number of the package of drivers, but within that package, the audio driver is 4.42.
As for uninstalling nVidia's drivers before reinstalling them, I have honestly never bothered unless I've been having problems. I just install the newer versions on top and Windows tends to sort itself out. But, if you really want to uninstall the old versions first, you'll find them (as has been suggested) in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Please be careful that you don't uninstall the Unified driver tho, as doing this then installing _just_ the sound and video drivers will not allow your system to function at 100%. I'd really just suggest loading the new drivers on top - never given me any problems, to be perfectly honest.
Hope this helps!
