New scanners have been put in at Victoria. See here for more information: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4600866.stm (Also an interesting video to watch on that page) I think these are a good idea, but not really viable at stations. Dogs seem ideal for sniffing out bombs but detecting weapons can be difficult. Randomly picking out passengers may cause offense to some people, especially if they believe they are being singled out due to race or ethnic origin.

Knee jerk anyone?
They would only be of any practical deterrent on a system where everyone was scanned, and on a closed system like Heathrow Express. Then they'd be impractical from the POV of queues, loading times etc. They just seem like something the Home Office decided to do to give them a bit of +ve publicty after 7th July - give it a while and they'll see sense and be dropped.

The problem with them is the police can ask any person at random to step into the scanner. As ChrisA correctly points out: What's the chances they won't dare ask anyone of 'ethnic' origin for fear of being branded racist.
Tom is correct. This is simply a knee-jerk reaction, and is totally unworkable.

They are asked but can choose not to be, since it's only a test. I thought that might be what you meant, but common sense got the better of me. About as ridiculous as singing to distract the attention of security gaurds like Stewie did on family guy. Clip here: video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1675606887562355464&q=family+guy
