Dear all, Firstly may I hope that all members from this forum were not involved in the horrific explosions this morning. This morning I woke up to a massive black cloud outside my window which didn't seem to have no end to it... I just took it as bad weather and didn't think much more of it, then a few hours later I was informed that there had been a massive explosion from the Buncefield fuel depot near Hemel Hempstead and that the big black cloud in the sky had no connection to the weather what so ever... It was infact the smoke from the explosion nearly 50-60 miles (maybe further!) miles away. Here is a photo of London in the afternoon attacked by the smoke from the explosion - cjolly.mysnaps.org.uk/p23736613.htmlMay God bless all those who lost their lives in this terrible atrocity.

I was up early this morning, and at 06.07 heard a loud wuuuuuddddddduuuuummmmmppppphhhhh, echoing from over in the west. Thought nothing more of it until I turned the box on at 08.30. Went out at about 10.30, and there was this stench of kerosene and oil in the air.

Nothing was heard in Hayes town, would that just be because the wind wasn't pointing in that direction?

Think the explosion woke me up (Walthamstow) but can't really remember tbh. It did get really dark in the late morning though when the smoke started drifiting over.

Same here. I remember waking up just after 6am because I heard a loud bang. Just as I was waking up I also felt a bit of a tremor, nothing much, but it did set a few car alarms off! I stayed awake for a few minutes and fell back to sleep, only to realise what had happened at about 1pm this afternoon!
But 2 things strike me that don't seem to be very important:
1. Who did it? I fail to believe this was an accident! 2. What are fuel supplies going to be like?

Everybody so far has said it has been an accident, and accidents like these have happened before in this country long before terrorists were invented. 2. All fuel companies have said it will not affect fuel supplies since they plan for exactly such an event. SOooo folks: DON'T PANIC

I couldn't care less about car users, no offence caused. What I was thinking as will people start panicking if there was to be a fuel shortage, which theres not, so no worrys

I make you right there, NOT important at all ;D Firstly folks it was a fuel storage depot - it really doesn't take much to cause a fire. Something as simple as using a light switch in that environment can be lethal. If terrorist's done it, i'm batman!! Secondly it supplied Heathrow and Luton airports - dunno about yours or your parents cars, but mine doesn't run on aviation fuel

but there was also a large amount of normal petrol in the tanks Colin, as well as diesel and kerosene (for aircraft).
There won't be a fuel shortage, but it wasn't just diesel and kerosene in the tanks.

Accidents like these make you wonder if the governments propsal (i refer you to the proposal of last week) to look into and possibly build nuclear power stations.

My & the missus were staying with friends at a place called Stalham which is 20 odd miles north east of Norwich, at six O'Clock our friend said that she felt the house shake! now I don't know if thats coincidence but where we were staying there is only one road and that is a side road and its a detached house! - Weird.

I heard it and woke up but didn't think anything of it until I saw the news - and I'm 45 miles away! People on another forum are all 'banned' from school because of the danger from the smoke and any further explosions!

I live about 10 miles away and when the 'big' one went off my initial thoughts were of lightning hitting the house as it was the bang followed by a grumble. I also heard, faintly, the two explosions after about 20 minutes later and thought this was the thunder storm moving away. I later heard when i got up about the explosions on the box. Even though there is not supposed to be a shortage I decided to fill up my tank anyway ... the garage down the road was queuing up the road and the tesco metro/express/local (petrol garage version of tesco) had no fuel left!! Tesco Watford also had massive queues. After all that driving I needed more fuel anyway!!

It's panic buying that will make supplies run out though. Like they say, tankers will be moved to other depots and freight trains may now resume to Fawley and perhaps even Furzebrook?!

10 of the 20 fires have now been extinguished/burnt themselves out, although these were only the smallest ones.

Spoke to me parents on the 'phone Monday evening; they live in deepest Kent and my Mam said she heard it too! Just been reading the paper on it [for the 19th time] and, well, memories of that hurricane we had in 1987.
