Anyone know of any FREE software to converting WMA files to MP3? It seems a bit unfair that I've bought some music legally yet I can only get it in WMA! I have a horrible feeling that the new MP3 player I'm getting for Christmas doesn't accept WMA files so I'll be well stuffed!

Well, nealry all mp3 players play wma files. I've converted my mp3 players so it works as a memoery stick as well!
TBH, if your mp3 player did play wma, use wma as the files are smaller and you can fit more on.

I can't help as far as the software is concerened Alan, but what i can tell you is that the softwar that came with my player does all the conversions it deems necessary to allow transfer to the player.
I'll have a play around later and see if I can add anything further to this!

I have a horrible feeling that the new MP3 player I'm getting for Christmas doesn't accept WMA files so I'll be well stuffed! I have software that does all sorts pf conversions, I mainly use it to convert things to and from my phone. However it does convert WMA to MP3, there is a free version, however it will only allow you to convert the first 2 mins of something, you can have it upgraded for about £17 and then the software is fully operational. Drop me a PM if you need to know more matey!

Have been checking and my new MP3 player does take the WMA files, so things aren't too bad, however there's still the problem of when I do my radio work, the 'Deejay' program won't recognise WMA files! There's plenty of converters out there, but almost all of them cost money, either to register or buy! Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll check out Download.com and see what they can offer!

Use GoldWave (http://www.goldwave.com) - that's a proper sound editor, it will convert to .mp3 if you install LAME (instructions on the site, tis really simple)

Yeah, use Goldwave already, however it won't load them because they are copy protected!
Time to switch to an MP3 download site like Napster. Also very handy because I can buy credit from the post office for Napster downloads seeing as I don't have a credit/debit card these days!
I was using AOL's own music site, which has an excellent selection and my downloaded tracks are billed to my AOL account, however I've cancelled the music club bit now.

Alan, I can reccomend Napster (Light - free) as they have an excellent selection of 'proper' music. I started on paid membership but now I am a Napster light member.

I indeed have just joined Napster light! I can get top-up vouchers from the post office (I've checked!) so that's my problem solved! ;D

Watch out with those, I'm not an expert with these P2P services *BUT* many people think that it's OK if you pay for a P2P client - it may not be, depending on exactly what you're getting...

Eh. Napster's okay. iTunes is also okay, but if you're a real audiophile, the sound quality isn't as good as you might want. Alan - you might want to take a look at Cheetah Audio Converter - link. Recommended by my very favorite Personal Computer World Magazine (nothing to do with PC World!!!!).

As I said I don't know that much about P2P but I did gather some people were paying for the P2P client then sharing files just like they always used to when it was free - i.e. the stuff was still illegal but they thought it was OK because they were paying for the client?
