OK
Is there really a point in getting an oyster card, if you're only gonna travel into london at the weekends?
Also, what are the passes that the humble passengers use to get through the concourse gates....... looks like a staff pass?? Where they put something over the sensor and it opens without a ticket.

Is there really a point in getting an oyster card, if you're only gonna travel into london at the weekends? Definitely. Oyster is very handy even if you don't load it with period tickets (Weekly/Monthly travelcards etc.). The PrePay system is great in that not only are the fares cheaper, you will never be charged more than the cost of a daily travelcard no matter how many single journeys you make (that feature is called 'Price Capping'). You can load credit onto your card at any LU ticket office/touch screen machine and also in selected shops across London which are generally covered in TfL branding. Also, what are the passes that the humble passengers use to get through the concourse gates....... looks like a staff pass?? Where they put something over the sensor and it opens without a ticket. The staff passes are also in the form of an Oyster card, although I'm not too sure what they look like (I've only ever seen a pre-Oyster one). A 'normal' Oyster functions in exactly the same way (you have to 'touch in' and 'touch out'), the only difference being that you have to pay for the journeys you make. An under 16s Oyster also entitles you to free travel on London Buses & Trams.

I have no pressing need for an Oyster card as I make use of a "Day Travelcard" ticket, which includes travel from Cambridge to London and back, plus a zone 1-6 Travelcard, all for £21 or £13.85 with a railcard (valid on this ticket, but not plain travelcards).
This effectively gives me a zone 1-6 travelcard for less than the zone 1-2 travelcard, so I'm happy to put up with a paper ticket.

If you want an oyster card and don't put a week or more ticket on I think there is a small deposit - in the region of £3-£5
As for the staff cards, they are the same as an oyster with the exception of saying 'staff' on. The one I have seen is pale blue but I dont know if this is a general rule.
They have oyster in some railway stations but only in London or close by - I wonder if it will become national?

Kenny L has enough trouble persuading the TOCs to accept the installation of Oyster equipment at rail stations within the GLA - making it a national product would be appallingly difficult.

And do you know what the Oyster card is probably one of the best things that Ken has done. The worst thing about it all as OKE says is that i can travel from Ealing Broadway to paddington on my zone 3 to 1 card. but my g/f who has a zone 6 to 2 cant, even though she has more than enought money (on top up) to cover the journey. I keep telling her to say to any one that asks that she got on at royal oak!! It is very silly since Paddington is on the extreme of zone 1. Another thing, ealing broadway has oyster gates by virtue of it being a LU station. So why are there no such gates at paddington. (could you get up the stairs that go to platforms 13-14? Also got caught out going from Charing cross to tunbridge wells. I can get a boundry card. My girlfriend cant get jack even though once she has got to CX she has no need for the ticket she has been forced to buy. SO irritating. It would make it all so much easier. So much for a integrated transport policy.

Cheers for your replies, but what i meant with regards to the 'staff' pass, was that i saw an OAP (or an oldish looking bloke) using the sensor thing on the concourse gates..... is that with the oyster card??

If you saw him place a card over a yellow reader, then yes, he was using an Oyster card. The old freedom passes have also been replaced by Oyster cards (no different in that the bearer still gets free travel on all tube, DLR, but, rail and tram services).

There are LU ticket gates between the H&C platforms and the mainline platforms at Paddington (they're on the bridge, although they are frequently open) and by virtue of being LU gates I presume they have Oyster sensors but I didn't think to look (I was more concerned about whether I was going to make my train or not!).

Paddington is wholly within zone 1. In any case the tiket office staff can find out out which station she entered at, what time she entered and even which gate it was - it's all there on the oyster card Also got caught out going from Charing cross to tunbridge wells. I can get a boundry card. My girlfriend cant get jack even though once she has got to CX she has no need for the ticket she has been forced to buy. Why can't your girlfriend get a boundry ticket too? are you fibbing about the stations and zones you intend to use? ;D I used to work in the ticket office (spent a long year stuck behind the glass), and though my knowlegde is a little rusty now - I cannot see what possible reason would prevent your G/F from obtaining such a ticket.
