I was wondering what safety training certificates the different LU staff need to hold. Might sound like a stupid question but is it right to assume that all train operators track trained (including PTS) as they might find themselves having walk up the open track and obviously sidings and depots. What about station staff? I've seen LU staff walk off the platform to what looked like scotch and clipping points. Do LU staff have their own protection masters (for traffic and engineering hours)?

The Safety Critical Licence includes Track, Fire, your actual job and the any other areas. For example a Service Duty Manager has something along the lines of: Operate Signalling Control systems Implementation of Emergency Operating Procedures Track Fire *Looks at Phil*

All my license (Service Operator) says is: Train Operation operate signalling control system. and track/ fire etc is part of that On nights once, a telephone engineer came round and he had about thirty id cards and licenses, for entry to different depots, offices, first aid, track, fire, permit to enter. I really must take out shares in photo-me ;D

Good question The safety critical licence has to be re-tested every 12 months, and everyone has Fire and Track as a base standard - with role specific stuff added. In addition we also have 'Competence Assurance', which assess's you 'on the job' and results in an NVQ Railway Transport Operations. Again this is done every 12 months (6 for Train Operators). As part of the track licencing, we have to do a 'track walk' - on live tracks first time , dummy track after that. The track element qualifies us to access the track, following correct proceedures, as part of our jobs for role specific tasks only - so generally speaking, we don't use protection masters, as we can protect ourselves. Protection masters are used (day or night) for engineering works, etc of course. Finally, there are set periods when medicals must be passed, though hearing and sight are checked every 12 months as a base minimum. As far as Depots go, it's part of the 'Road training' - so all drivers on a line will be familliar with all the depots on their respective lines. My licence (Train Operator) has: Fire OPT (operational proceedures training) Network Rail (same as OPT, but for Network Rail) C Stock D Stock Train Operation* * Train Operation is described as: Operating a train in passenger service over London Underground and Third party infrastructure and being safe whilst on or about the track (includes engineering trains being operated and/or empty stock moves).

Us poor Infraco folk generally have a large number of certs to carry around. In my wallet I've got:
Safe Systems of Work On Electrical Equipment - Level 1 for Signalling Supplies up to 600v. Manual Handling, Ladders and Towers Cert Depot Familiarisation for Queen's Park Entry Permit, QAF 54 (Key Holder) Certificate Safety on the Track Cert (Track/Depot Accustomed, Track/Depot Competent) Fire Cert (Core and Engineering) Cab Permit Building Pass
In addition to this we have extra things on our licences. While I don't have a Safety Critical Licence I need to have an Internal MRBCV licence and an IRSE licence, and I'm working towards the following IRSE categories: Signalling Designer Signalling Functional Tester
and the Internal BCV Licence? One day soon I might get one for Central Line ATO Data Preparation and Waterloo and City Signalling Design Preparation. Of course I'm then working towards preparer's licences for the Bakerloo Central and Victoria also...

Safety on the Track Cert (Track/Depot Accustomed, Track/Depot Competent) Is that the equivalent of having Area A, B & C certification? I wasn't sure as I was only issued with Area A at Nf.

Depot Competent means I can go into areas B and C providing my own protection if safe to do so. To enter an area 'A' I have to be area A trained for the depot concerned.

Hasn't someone thought to combine all these certificates into one, perhaps it could be stored on an Oyster card so lots of different permutations can be used. Isn't it rather awkward carrying >10 certificates with you at a time?
