A major player in the household appliance market has developed a KETTLE, which can be remotely turned on via your mobile phone. This is expected to be available from the middle of next year and is expected to retail for around £100.
That'd be very handy!!!

They should make one that can be turned on from an SCC desk - that way you can have the water boiling in Barking Sidings when the T/Op stables his train

Hmmm. Thats got me thinking OneKEA. Why not have a plunger button installed at specific points uopn the routes, which then operates a relay circuit, switching the kettle on? That'd be neat. Pull into Loughton, operate the 'press to start boiling sequence' plunger, and by the time I'd pull into Epping, they'd be a hot kettle of water. Seeing as the boiler's been vandalised YET AGAIN, we can't have liquid refreshment here.

So it switches the kettle on. Ok, great. What about filling it with water first?

Cor! you're asking a lot! You'll be wanting mobiles to remove panties remotely next!
EDIT :Come to think of it you can already do that. Just ring home on the mobile and text the message 'N.O.R.W.I.C.H. Which means 'Nickers off ready when I come home.
If it's the girlfriend you are contacting send the text B.U.R.M.A. which translates to 'Be undressed ready my Angel'
If it's the boyfriend you are phoning then I can't help you!
(I wonder if this should be in the 'jokes' thread?)

Hmm, just imagine someone finding your mobile and asking why the f**k have you got KETTLE in the phone book? Brings back memories of the South Acton Branch's alternative name: T&BBTKB - There & Back Before The Kettle Boils...

Hmmm. Thats got me thinking OneKEA. Why not have a plunger button installed at specific points uopn the routes, which then operates a relay circuit, switching the kettle on? Err. Most of you already take long enough to grab hot water at the various points (particularly Tower Hill eastbound where we can see you ) I dare say many of you will take just as long to hit the plunger. And then when it goes wrong....? As for operating the system from an SCC, there are lots of things I would love to have waiting for some of our train ops when they get off. A nice cup of tea doesn't make it in the top 100 list though ;D As for the thread subject matter. Why on earth would you want such a gadget? How much would it then cost to put the kettle on? What happens if you call the kettle and you get diverted to voicemail? Will we be able to send a text to request hot water at a certain time? The answers to these and more will be needed until I go out and buy one, use it twice and then stick it on top of the kitchen cupboard (the one that gets really dusty).

Now, why not have a plug-in device like the timers you can get which you then plug whatever you want into, then activate from your phone? Then you could plug in an ordinary £10 kettle and also use it for anything else that crops up.

Or you could just switch it on when you get home and have a couple of minutes rest.

Or just have a time switch programmed to boil the kettle when you're due back or better still buy a rapid boil kettle.
The one thing I've always wanted is a device that will enable me to record a programme on TV when I'm out and about. How many times have you heard that something interesting is on only that you can't get home to record it or know anyone available that know's how to work their video. A quick phone call home type a few keys and hey presto the video starts recording. I know what you're going to say, what if you don't have a blank cassette in the machine. Well why can't they allow those digi recorders to do this?
