A journey into town today, at least I dont have very far to go to get into 'town'. I avoided my home line like the plague for some reason [ ;D] and ventured down the Pic to Hatton Cross, a run back to Acton, up the District to Ealing Common, before retaking the Pic to Rayners past that place that gives some people a reminder of odd jaunts... ;D. Back on the Met to H-o-t-H, before wandering over to Wealdstone and taking the DC local into Euston. A quick walk to Kings Cross and a look at the works, not much change from last time, so around to Baker Street, then up to Mary-le-bone [as one T/Op calls it]. Now, wandering round the passageway, I noticed a gentleman having a spot of bother carrying his cases, so I thought, you know, show good cause and lend a hand. This I did. after getting permission to help him, carry his cases, rather slowly, we walked up the stairs. Up to the NR barrier, and I was greeted with total animosity by the young bloke on sentry duty. Not even a good morning as I waved my pass under his nose. I helped the gentleman onto the train, finding him a seat devoid of litter [wasnt easy]. We sat down. I was planning on going elsewhere, but I was so taken by his story of being an ex Euston main line fireman, and I told him of my employment. I stayed on until West Ruislip. We had a good ol' chin wag, with him insisting I take £10 as a thank you gift. I couldnt refuse, without risk of causing offence, as I left, I wished him a pleasant onward journey, and he said he'd write to my gov'nor [!] commending me on rendering assistance.
All in a days work I say... I'm quite 'chuffed' to receive a commendation, my first one I might add. Could even be a Silver 'Thanks To You'.
Now, how does one get back home from West Ruislip without using the Central??? I know, I'll get the U1 Bus to Uxbridge!!! ERROR! The bus arrived at the station, packed full of roudy school kids. We got going and entered Hillingdon, missiles flew past my ears, bags, cans, etc. Ding-ding-ding-ding-ding. We got to just past the A40 bridge, and the driver coshed it, got up and addressed the entire bus: "Can you lot stop dinging that f****in bell". It werent me, it was 'im, came the usual reply. Entering Uxbridge, they did it again. As the bus stopped, they all dashed off, swarmed onto the station making a hell of a racket. I merrily wandered up the platform, and found aseat near the front, in relative peace. A journey back to Bakers, and then round to Liverpool Street, out to Stratford, Jub to Canny Town and then 4 more stops on the Docklands. A quick wander and home.
I will return to doing the handle on Saturday. I'm sure my colleagues will fill me in on the fun I have missed ;D
