Have any of you had experience of 'Netmeeting' It is part of windows and is free and installed with the main programme. It is far better than normal IM's in that it allows encryption between users and also conferencing. Webcam support is also avaialable. If only I could work out how to make the damn thing go.

Are you sure it comes with windows? By chance I'm currently in windows (I spend most of my time in Linux, but windows software for making panoramas is so much simpler and quicker than the linux equivalent) and I don't appear to have it.

From what I can remember of your internet connection, you have a router with NAT (Network Address Translation), which basicly hides your computer from the Internet (usually a good thing). Netmeeting can't cope with this, and probably won't be updated any time soon as I believe that MS now consider it to be deprecated (dead).

Oh yes you'll have Netmeeting if you have windows. It's hidden but if you do a system search and type in 'netmeeting' you'll find it.

Therin lies a problem, this windows installation needs repairing - every time I try to search for anything it crashes! Chris Well you can do a filecheck Chris. Put your windows disk in the drive and cancel all screens that appear. Then in the 'run' part of the start menu type 'cmd' in the box. When the black screen appears type sfc /scannow' (without the quotes and with a space after the 'sfc' )after the little chevron and then press enter. The system will then check itself and restore any missing files. You can also find out the method at this url>> www.compphix.com/windowsfileprotection.htmlFailing that go to thiS URL and follow the instructions EXACTLY (print them out) other wise you'll lose your files. www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RIRemember that although I have posted this information to help you, you do so at your own risk.!!

Netmeeting isn't installed on XP by default. If you really want it, typing conf.exe into the run box apparently starts the installer. However, note that MS have removed it from the standard install for a reason, as it doesn't work properly with many common network configurations and cameras, and has been superceded by the camera features in MSN/Windows Messenger.

Yep Compsci is right. That's why I won't use windows messenger on account of it's insecurity. WM and MSM are continually 'reporting back' an spying. Windows want you to use it to nose on what you are doing. I have nothing to hide but I don't like being snooped on. If you want to find out more Get a book called 'The XP files' by Guy Hart-Davis.
