This afternoon I was at Gants Hill, waiting for an eastbound (inner rail) train.
The platform indicator showing three Hainault via Newbury Park services 2 mins, 5 mins, 9 mins (iirc). Then all but the first one disapeared, and for about 12 minutes (~17:58 to ~16:10) the first train alternated between 2 and 3 minutes away with every refresh of the display (I don't actually know what the interval is, but several times a minute). For about 6 minutes in the middle there was a second train, a Woodford via Hainault, started at 18 minutes away and disappeared when it was 12 minutes away.
Only one westbound arrived during this time.
Then they announced delays on both roads, followed shortly by an announcement that the eastbound was suspended Leytonstone to Woodford via Hainault due to a stalled train at Newbury Park.
So, I went upstairs and got a bus to Newbury park where I was in time to get two photos of said stalled train. It was stopped with the cab door adjacent to the west end of the platform but all the rest of the train was not in the station. The passengers had obviously been detrained through the cab, as it was apparently empty apart from the t/op.
The train then pulled forward to the normal stopping mark and all the doors opened. Someone, presumably a member of station staff, then went through the train closing all the interconnecting doors. After what felt like an extended stay in the platform it departed in passenger service towards Hainault - the front of the train indicated it was a service that was originally meant to finish there, so I presume that's what it did.
Any ideas what the fault was?
I was particularly surprised to see it leave in passenger service, although there was no particularly obvious problems bringing it fully into the station so why leave it sat at the end of the station?
(photos to follow shortly)
