Hi everybody, I'm a newbie on here and have always had an interest in the underground although never employed on it. Forgive me if this has been raised before but does anybody have any pictures of Cravens 60TS in service on the main Central Line as full length trains (prior to the Woodford-Hainault shuttle)? I would assume this would be between 1960 and 1962/3 although please correct me if I'm wrong.
Cheers
Richard

Richard, if you are not already a member, join THE LONDON UNDERGROUND RAILWAY SOCIETY or LURS, and ask their library. I have just realised that I do not recall ever having seen any photos of the 1960 Stock on the Central main, though UNDERGROUND mag issue 3 I think it was had one of the Thyristor-control conversion on the shuttle at Woodford on the front cover.

The same thought had occurred to me, that I have never seen a photo of the 1960TS anywhere other than Woodford - Hainault and Loughton - Ongar.
Welcome along BTW

That's a good idea Oracle. I wasn't aware of their existance. I have a bit of a soft spot for those trains as I used to catch them from Woodford to Roding Valley (I know, I know.....lazy b*gger!) when I was 8 or 9 years old, first the ones with two Standard stock trailer cars in the middle (they were really uncomfortable) and later with the single 38TS trailer (a lot better!). Living on a road between these two stations you could always tell a 60TS from a 62TS from the sound it made even when the leaves on the embankment trees masked the view in the summer. I also remember the 4 car 67TS train on this line and even a 3 car 73TS (full of equipment) and travelled on both of these from time to time. The line seems to have lost a bit of character for me since the passing of these old trains.

I also remember the 1960 TS test train that was parked up at Northfields, which would be late Seventies? The 1073 Stock would have been one of the two test trains. They were also rested at Northfields, as were from time to time, CO/CP stock and R Stock: the latter bein gin sand drag tests I think.
The 1967 Stock usually ran in ATO mode around the loop, of course, but on the Auto Tube Rambler tour a full 8-car train rain in service in auto mode around the top of the loop.

I used to drive the Craven stock on the Ongar line and never had any bother with them. They were old trains but very reliable at the time.

That is a good picture - when did the building at Debden get demolished? That's the first time I've seen a piccy of it.

Which building? If you're talking about the house on the left i think that's still unchanged. Just less obvious now with canopies over the eastbound platform and passenger bridge.

Debden station was partially rebuilt in the early 70's I believe.

Richard, if you are not already a member, join THE LONDON UNDERGROUND RAILWAY SOCIETY or LURS, and ask their library. LURS no longer has a library. The whole collection was sold by auction over the last few years. The LTM library was given first refusal on anything that they needed (and was given a lot of material as a result). The rest is now dispersed. As I understand it, the library took up a lot of room in someone's house, was difficult to arrange visits, and with the advent of the LTM reference library was felt no longer to be needed as a separate resource.

Yours truly must therefore have the (former) Library's copies of UndergrounD which he edited...those copies not edited that were acquired at LURS postal auction were sold on. That has cheered me up!

I seem to recall a photo of the 60TS at (almost certainly) Leyton, but where I saw it was another matter! I remember travelling on one from Newbury Park WB one Sunday when I was a kid. I also recall travelling endlessly back and forth on the Hainault loop on the original ATO conversion which had the equipment in the space between the cab and the first set of double doors, with the windows sort of whitewashed out. There's probably a picture somewhere.......

Richard
I've found the picture I was thinking of, page 321 of "Rails Through the Clay" by Desmond Croome and Alan Jackson. Photo is attributed to a Tony Milne, and shows an eight car 60TS at Leyton EB, destination Hainault via Newbury Park.

You won't be disappointed, it's one of the definitive Underground books, and a lot of book for the money
