In the mid-80's, I was doing PA surveys on the Central line, and during a site visit at Newbury Park, the Station Supervisor, showed me a small synagogue, which appeared to be fitted into an old waiting room.
Is it still there??

Many thanks for that info.
Although not of the Jewish faith myself, it was not the sort of thing one expects to see on a station, old signal boxes, CERs, SERs probably - but not a synagogue!

Strange that it's at Newbury Park rather than Golders Green...

Not really.
There is quite a big Jewish community around that part of the Central Line. So the synagogue is just catering for the needs of the local populace.

One more story I've been told about the place.....
The synagogue at Newbury Park was created in the former canteen [Best canteen on the Central Line] which closed when the sidings were abandoned. This was the second canteen. The first had been in a tin hut right next to the A12 at the front of the station. That one was even better. And the synagogue was used every saturday after the local Jewish community asked the station master [Harry Posner a really wonderful man] who was himself Jewish as to the possibilties. The cantor in the services had the most beautiful singing voice I have ever heard and people used to actually stop and listen to him whiclst entering the station. His diction too, was perfect, The "Adonia's and Yisroels" could be heard down on the platform and some of the local jews who had not gone to the service sometimes could be seen on the platform joining in while waiting for the train.
A member of staff got sacked because of the synagogue. The cleaninlines of which was actually on the station cleansing roster. The community used to keep a lot of booze under the bench type pews for reasons I cannot fathom. This was all good stuff. Whisky, Gin, Vodka et al. Any road up this member of staff got sacked as he was the culprit when some of the jolly juice started to go missing and he was caught so pinching.
