The GWR that runs beside the Central Line at Northolt (Chilten line) begins at Marylebone. Did it ever begin at Paddington. Getting a bit confused over this.

I think (though other people, please correct me if im wrong!) This was originally part of the GWR, running form Paddington to Birmingham, and ran along the route of the Central line (which wasn't extended until 1947) between the current stations of North Acton (where the line diverges from the main line from Paddington) all away along past West Ruslip and on to Birmingham.
At South Ruslip, the line from Marylebone via Sudbury Hill converges with the main route. This connection is used by Chiltern to run services between Marylebone and Birmingham. This has left the section between North Acton and South Ruslip, more of a branch for the occasional passenger train, and freight movements.
This arrangement originally stemmed from the overcrowding at Paddington that occurred (as Paddington essentially serves the whole of the South West).
In the 1980s BR decided to divert services from Birmingham into Marylebone station, since this station was at the time being under-utilized (the Beeching cuts had basically cut all services north of Aylesbury). Hence why the original main line into Paddington only sees the occasional service now, or for freight trains going via the Greenford branch.
Hope this is clear, other forum members please clear up any inaccuracies that there might be!
Rob.

Yes, it was the GWR main line to Birmingham and beyond, as stated above. It was singled a while ago once the main services were diverted to Marylebone, but until very recently (and may still be AFAIK) there was a Padd-High Wycombe and return via that route every weekday morning to keep drivers' route knowledge.

According to the National Rail journey planner there is a direct Chiltern service from Paddington to Princes Risborough departing 11:11 arriving 12:13. I haven't been able to find any passenger services in the opposite direction.

A train from Gerard's Cross is scheduled to arrive Paddington at 1043 (M-F), and then departs at 1111 for Princes Risborough. The route has been used when Marylebone is not available due to engineering to maintain a through service from London to the Midlands.

Yeah, theres one booked passenger train a day each way on the Northolt - Oak Oak Common Junction - Paddington link. 10.01 ex Gerrards X is through West Rui, around 10.35. 11.11 ex Padd is through at about 11.35.

Seeing there's been an interest, I've got a copy on VHS, about 15? years old from when it was shown on 4. If anyone REALLY wants it I can probably knock up a DVD for you, though goodness knows what the quality will be like by then. Let me know if you're desperate.

And, just thought I'd point out, the accompanying music to Lets go to Birmingham, is a Strauss number!

If so, I remember that! They played 'The Great St Trinians Train Robbery' a good few times!

I was interested in the video as I was a signalman at Park Royal for four years circa 1964. when on early shift travelling up from W Ruislip Drivers used to drop me off outside the box, saved the walk from Hanger Lane. My father was a Driver at W Ruislip before going to the Met, so I had a good few cab rides on a Sat as it was fairly quiet.
The line was quite busy until the West Coast line was electrified with an hourly service to Bham as well as a fair few freight workings in and out of Park Royal.
Looking at the video a lot has changed , but a fair amount is still familiar.
