1. Why is the station vault at Shepherd's Bush pained black? Combined with the green tiling it makes the station almost as miserable and dark as Mile End... 2. Where do the stairs at the end of the platform go? To the old signal box or to the pump control room? 3. What is the purpose of the large tunnel above and to the side of the e/b station tunnel? Ventilation? 4. How many lifts did the station have? There are a number of old tunnels running all over the place at the intermediate station level. Seeing as how the station building will be demolished ( ) is there any chance that these lift shafts could be restored to use?

1. Well, white vaults show up the dirt a lot quicker, and having black could make it [the dirt] less noticable. 2. Stairs at east end of SHB go to the Pump Room 3. Will speak to those in the know about this one, but you could be right in yoyur assumption... My guess is its connected with the pump room. 4. I think the station had four lifts in two shafts... not entirely sure on that, will dig out a book.

When I did my station familiarisation at SBC, the supervisor informed me that the pump room is actually in the station, while the stairs at the end of the platforms lead to a fanshaft. I asked if we could have a look up the stairs but he declined. My blue shirt was easier to wash than his white one.................
SBC is a totally horrid station. The basement area actually puts the creeps up grown men (well, me certainly!) and is absolutely grotesque. The old lift shafts are incredibly dirty and the passages in the station look awful. As said, the highlight of the station has got to be that basement............

You have got to see the basement to fully understand how grim it is - if in the unlikely event I work on the Notting Hill group again I'll take a camera with me one time. Come to mention it none of the stations on that group are in a great state at the moment.

And I thought Down Street was grimy... Hmm... might nudge a few elbows in the right department....
